This exceptional book melds the pleasures of character-driven fiction with the large sweep of the best historical novels. Morris’s people feel real, as tangible as one’s self, friends, or family. The links between the modern-day people and their forebears, those Jews hunted down and killed during the Inquisition, are felt in how the author inhabits every one of them. The result is to experience history from the inside. It is to comprehend how we are shaped by the past and how we shape the future. Ultimately, it is to feel life as a continuum, capacious and grand. I would never have imagined that such a dark story could be inspiring, but in Morris’s sure hands it is. Gateway to the Moon is humane, fascinating, and absolutely compelling. I have never read anything like it. If you’re tired of reading the same stories again and again, read this one. It will shake up your heart and your mind.

The author works off a fascinating historical plot: the history of Crypto-Jews in New Mexico. Alternating chapters are set during the Spanish Inquisition (beginning 1492), the Portuguese Inquisition (beginning 1536), the New Spain Inquisition (around 1600) and 1992, which is of course, 500 years after the start of the Spanish Inquisition and Columbus's first journey to the New World. A tale is woven among a group of people who know they are Jews, a group of people who convert to Christianity, but know they were once Jews and Hispanics who do not know that their forebears were Jewish. In the latter category, are people who light candles and eat braided bread on Friday night, do not eat pork or milk with meat and circumcise males. This is their tradition without knowing why.Morris's writing is better in the non-contemporary chapters. The characters, their relationships and historical settings are well developed even powerful. The author provides a list of all of the main characters, placing an asterisk next to those for whom there is an historical record. The contemporary fictional characters are unfortunately stereotypical: Why is it necessary for Rachel's mother to be a Holocaust survivor or Miguel to drive a low-rider? Why did Miguel's mother have to be a rape victim? Is it realistic to create mystical connections with foods and places of distant, unknown ancestors?There is an over-arching astronomical theme exemplified by Miguel's fascination with astronomy. But whatever connection the author wishes to make between astronomy and her main focus, the story of Crypto-Jews is rather strained. Does Miguel's interest in astronomy spring from his ancestor who sailed with Columbus on the Santa Maria? The author is suggesting that each of us is more than his/her DNA. We are also a product of the traditions, loves and losses of those who came before. How to actually disclose and relate to that, is, as the author suggests, rather difficult.

The author bases the novel on two intertwining themes. Descendants of converso families in 1490’s Spain become crypto Jews by the 1990’s in New Mexico. Secondly, the author likens, space exploration of the “Unknown” to the exploration and navigation of the New world. The story flips back and forth from the 1490’s-1600’s to the 1990’s.Many characters fill the novel, each personality, lively and distinct. To advance the historical chain of events, the author depicts amazing, generational short stories. Morris builds present day characters through lustrous, lengthy tales, through the opinions of other figures and through similarities of ancestry.Not an action-oriented plot, the author uses colorful, vibrant imagery with powerful lamentations from the past or elated hopes for the future to weave the story of each personality. Little conversation takes place as the characters interact minimally with one another. As the story progresses, each character embarks upon a particular journey of discovery.

I thought that Gateway was a truly epic great book, and signals that Mary Morris has become a world class writer. It was a moving look into a family history through centuries starting from The Sephardic Jews of Portugal at the time of the inquisition and ending in 20th century New Mexico.. The images of what the earlier characters endured is moving and rather terrifying, particularly in light of where our current situation is and might still go. The level of research is exceptional. I was sorry to finish.

Just finished reading Gateway to the Moon. An incredibly compelling read......a real page turner and beautifully written. It has introduced me to a subject that I was totally unfamiliar with, but, now can’t wait to read more about it. WOW!! A MUST READ!! And a book that I look forward to introducing others to..

Really made me think about what it was like for people in Columbus's ships and I did not know about the Inquisition continuing in the New World, Portugal or other details of that terrible period. Everything tied up neatly in the end, which makes it a bit unrealistic. Still, compelling characters, and loved the descriptions of New Mexico, and the Santa Maria. And tangine.

Excellent novel for the overs of historical fiction. I even got recipes for Moroccan food that I made and loved. Great book. Especially for those that do AncestryDNA or the other DNA/Ancestry providers who don't understand why they have Iberian Peninsula Ancestry and Jewish Ancestry. Read no farther than the Spanish/Catholic Inquisition. It wasn't just Spain that the Inquisition occurred in, it was also in Portugal, Mexico and any place that the Catholic Church had a control and influence and Jews may have immigrated to.

I met the author at a book signing in Santa Fe NM. She read passages from the book and discussed it with the sizable audience. I promptly purchased it and read in short order. It's a page turner. I believe it is perfect for a mini-series show. I hope the networks are paying attention.

Although interested in the Methodist denomination (I am not Methodist), I found the author to be a very articulate, thoughtful, apologist for Christianity as a whole. There are very few theologians who are truly intellectual enough, and yet deeply spiritual as well, whom I believe could defend the Christian faith and stand up to any atheist or agnostic in a debate (and I've watched quite a few of these kinds of debates with much embarrassment on Youtube). Yet, William Willimon would be a match for the famed atheists Richard Dawkins or, the now deceased, Christopher Hitchens. In short, this book is a truly insightful and enjoyable read.

As a late arrival to the Methodist Church, I found this book to be both enlightening and inspiring (even the footnotes were helpful). Frankly, at this stage of my life, I'm not interested in any church that doesn't challenge me to become like Jesus. However, my experience in this tradition so far indicates to me that there are an awful lot of Methodists that are either uninformed or unconvinced by the values and doctrines espoused by Dr. Willimon. Despite that, I remain in this tradition because I'm inspired by the potential for transformation if these beliefs were ever truly practiced. One wonders if the rapid decline in the Methodist church could be reversed simply by Methodists becoming who they say they are. After reading this book, I'm convinced that such a revival could occur just that way.

I teach theology at a middle-of-the-road/progressive United Methodist school; in several courses I try to present classic Christian theology in a clear format. This book fits the bill well. The author and I may disagree on this point or that point, but as I say, the book presents classic theology in a clear way--can't ask for more than that!

Methodist Doctrine isn't the most scintillating of subjects… let's be honest. But Bishop Willimon puts his Southern storytelling abilities to work and makes (what can be) a dull subject come alive. He's practical and yet true to the essence of Wesleyan thought. Great gift for seminarians WHILE IN school, but also a good way for career clergy to brush up on long-forgotten or under utilized doctrinal ideas.

I enjoyed this book for the information. Learned a lot about the faith and belief of the Methodist Church and teaching.

This is a great little book for those thinking about joining the Methodists or for those new to the faith. It was extremely helpful to me in my quest for understanding the basic tenets of the Methodist faith. After being a Baptist for most of my life, I wanted to be sure that the Methodist faith was comparable to my lifelong beliefs. This book provided that information without a great deal of technical jargon as is found in some books regarding Christianity. It was an easy read without the feel of a "textbook."

Mr. Mistovich is an author or coauthor of numerous EMS books and journal articles and is a frequent presenter at national and state EMS conferences. Keith J. Karren, PhD, EMT-B, is Professor Emeritus and former Chair of the Department of Health Science at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He has been a professional Health Science and EMS educator and author for 40 years. Dr. Karren received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Brigham Young University in 1969 and 1970 and his PhD in Health Science from Oregon State University in 1975. Dr. Karren was one of the earliest certified EMTs in Utah and helped found SAVERS, a community volunteer EMS ambulance association in Utah. Dr. Karren co-founded the Prehospital Emergency Care and Crisis Intervention Conference, held annually in Salt Lake City for 36 years, one of the premier EMS conferences in North America. Dr. Karren is the author or coauthor of numerous books on prehospital emergency care and health, including First Aid for Colleges and Universities, First Responder: A Skills Approach, and Mind/Body Health.

Works great the ring can be used to add another chain or can be placed in the front of the throat and the two ends held tight for pressure that does not choke i enjoy its it a simple toy that can be used for a few other things 😉

Glad I could find the book just wish I could have had the work book with it I couldn’t find it on your site.

The book is great but I am pretty sure they skipped the edit and review part before publishing! There are so many errors! A lot of sentences are jumbled and a few definitions are mixed up. You can make sense of it but its pretty disappointing for a book that is otherwise professional.

A good read, and you don't have to read it in the book order, to enjoy

*WARNING* for mature reader due to adult situationsMikaroz is a gargoyle and a guard on the space station. Mikaroz knows the odd little human prisoner is off limits. Mikaroz has to fight his attraction, but he can try to make sure she eats.Greta may be sitting a prison cell in space, but she feels no remorse for killing the slimy alien that was trying to rape her. Greta is so hungry, but the nice, gray, winged guard doesn't understand that the food he brings makes her sick. Greta can't understand the odd attraction she has toward the gentle giant. Is it hunger? Is it because she's been in captivity for to long.I luved this story! There is a book mentioned that comes before this one where Mikaroz is first introduced, but I didn't read it and I don't feel as though I missed anything. Gargoyles are great is stories, and this one has an almost child like quality to him when first around Greta. I think Ms. Phillips has done a great job in making a gargoyle threatening, but not scary....loving, but not a push over. I highly recommend this book for any adult who likes goyles and HEAs.

This is a quick read, a delicious romance with a H/h as sweet as can be! Mikaroz is a gem, a diamond in the rough. He’s big and strong, with an intimidating appearance, yet he treats Greta with gentleness and respect. I love his reaction to his first ‘keess’ and different expressions Greta uses. Greta is no slouch! She can’t behave unkindly to the one person, in this hideous situation, who has been kind to her. She’s more than willing to defend herself and her Mikaroz, if need be. There is plenty of action; they’re in a very dangerous position. But through it all, weaves a beautiful love story!

Love this series! Mikaroz is a guard on the station where Greta is being held for killing her master who tried to rape her! She has been unable to eat any of the food given to prisoners since it makes her ill. Mikaroz worries for her. When the station is being taken over her life is in his claws,can she trust him to save her? I absolutely loved Mikaroz and Greta together!

I enjoyed this very much. It's fast paced instalove with just the best gargoyle ever. Our Texas girl knows how to handle herself and while she gives in to the emotions and the trauma of being kidnapped by aliens and everything is AWFUL, she still can pull it back and be the heroine I love reading. Thank you so much!

I love me a good gargoyle story and this one was a fun ride. The heroine and hero are both very likable, specially the wonderful gray big guy. LOLThere’s action, hot tension and love. I REALLY hope the author will bring us more stories about the alien gargoyles.Re-read material, recommended.

The story was short and sweet but it holds your attention from beginning to end with enough action and drama to keep you on your toes. A beautiful love story with awesome characters that won't disappointed in any way and so ready to read the next book in the series.

Loved this book! honey really has a way of drawing you in and making you feel for the characters!

Perhaps a few minor category changes, or perhaps new shipping and handling or return policies. The 2013 Seller Updates pushed many sellers to the limit. Fees changed and became tied to the eBay store levels sellers have. New picture requirements went into effect as sellers made a mad scramble to get their listings updated.The final outtake, as usual, is a better buyer experience.To thrive and grow in 2014 your eBay business needs to be fresh. You need to be nimble and able to react quickly, no matter if you are responding to eBay mandated changes or competitive pressure from other sellers.That is what all of my books are about.They teach you the basics. I was looking for a book which would help me sell a few things on eBay, and this was not the answer. This is oriented towards setting up shop on eBay, not getting rid of a few possessions. It was quite unhelpful in that regard.

I was delighted to find this tiny book so full of helpful advice that can be digested quickly by those of us eager to get started selling on eBay. Mr. Vulich writes as if speaking to the reader in a friendly way, sharing his own mistakes and helping us to avoid potential pitfalls. I particularly appreciated his sharing when costs are worthwhile or unnecessary. In addition, the book I received is the 2013 version so, as much as possible given the constant changes to everything online, I felt that it was pertinent to today's seller.That said, I felt he was a bit too brief sometimes and failed to answer some of my questions: 1) Regarding sales tax: does one collect tax only from buyers who reside in the same state as the seller? If the buyer is having the item shipped to someone in a different location, is there a way to see if the buyer (not the recipient) lives in the seller's state? When/how does the seller remit the collected taxes to the state? Does one need to get a tax number to start selling - "store" or no-store? Perhaps he could include suggestions about how to journal the sales and taxes collected in case one day (heaven forbid!) the seller might be audited? 2) Packing: While it's nice to advise one to "sell light items" so that everything fits into the US Postal Service's envelopes and boxes, unfortunately, most of us have oddly-shaped, large or fragile items to ship. More detail in this area would be helpful.My displeasure came at the end of the book where Mr. Vulich promotes four more books that he has written, two of which apparently enlarge on the content of this book. (To be fair, one is "Coming Soon", and I hope that it has addressed my suggestions.) I'd have been happy to pay more to get everything in one book, with a simple index at the end to direct the reader to the pertinent topics. Perhaps he could make a separate Part 2 section for those who wish, after diving into selling, to create a store.So, bottom line, should you buy the book? I think it's worthwhile for his advice. If you want to start selling 'yesterday', it'll encourage you to get started. Just keep track of your sales and, I think, collect the appropriate sales tax from buyers in your state. If you're NOT in a hurry to start selling, I think I'd wait until his pending book is published, or see if your local library has a recent eBay book filled with a few more details.

This book is very easy and nice to read. I rode this book in less than 2 hours and I am not a native english speaker. I agree with everything that is said. You will learn the most important things on how to sell on ebay. But I think the part on where to buy cheap things could be improve, Also a few words on having a website in appliance with the webmarketing good practise would be a good idea.

It was good enough, I suppose. I thought I was going to be getting a book and not a pamphlet, though. I actually laughed when I got it because it was, what? 1,000 words at most? Some good pointers but ebay's site does a pretty good job of telling you the same things.Honestly. I wouldn't waste my money on this if I were to do it over. Admire the authors gumption, however!

She is the author of Repeat After Me and Big Girl Small, which received the American Library Association's Alex Award for an adult book with special appeal to teen readers; Rachel's conversations with young readers inspired her to write her first YA novel, Blind. Rachel is on the faculty of the University of Chicago, where she teaches creative writing. She lives in Chicago with her husband, playwright Zayd Dohrn, and their two daughters. Rachel and her family spent six summers in Shanghai while she researched Someday We Will Fly.

SOMEDAY WE WILL FLY by Rachel DeWoskinPerformers in the Warsaw Circus must flee for their lives from the Nazis. As they flee to Shanghai, Lillia’s mother is lost. She and father left with no Choice, continue to Shanghai where Jews are being offered safety, but not an easy life. As the Japanese draw ever nearer, life becomes more tenuous and scary.Well written and researched, this YA novel is also a wonderful read for adults. The Jewish experience in war time China has been little known. This book attempts to rectify that omission and succeeds. Lillia, her father and those she comes in contact with are fully developed characters. The plot is engrossing.5 of 5 stars

“Someday We Will Fly” by Rachel DeWoskin is a fascinating account of Jewish refugees during WWII who escaped to Shanghai, one of the few places they could go without a visa. Not only is the setting unusual for a Holocaust story, main character Lillia and her family defy Jewish stereotypes — her parents are circus performers.At the start of the book, the family is still in Poland, their home. Just before they are to take a train that will take the family to a ship where they will sail to China, Lillia’s mother disappears. She does not reappear before they must leave to get to safety. Lillia details the travels in first person narrative, and she describes the trials of her younger sister, Naomi, who is not developing normally — not crawling or talking.In China, Lillia attends school and befriends a Chinese boy, Wei. Her father is unable to find work and they must rely on the charity of Jewish organizations. Lillia eventually manages to make some money performing at a “gentlemen’s club,” which would be forbidden if her father knew about it.The story is realistic, and Lillia is not always an admirable main character. She steals at various times in the story, and some of that theft has terrible consequences for another character in the story. In a discussion format, this would be a great question for teenagers to ponder: Is it ever all right to be dishonest? To steal? To lie?An interesting note is that the author describes what life was really like in Shanghai during that time for those refugees arriving from Europe with no money or valuables. When visiting Shanghai, travelers can see the Jewish museum, which shows the synagogue and photos from that time but does not explain the extreme hardship that those refugees experienced. In “Someday We Will Fly,” DeWoskin makes the hardships painfully real: the disease, the hunger, the lack of clean water and bathroom facilities. DeWoskin is unflinching in the realistic and harsh descriptions of the circumstances of both refugees and the inhabitants in Shanghai.While there are several different threads to the plot — the journey to Shanghai, Lillia’s schooling, her mother’s absence, her sister’s development, the Jewish plight, Lillia’s puppet-making — the overall story is compelling and eminently readable.This is a great choice for a book club or a class group — there is much to discuss, and many questions about morals and life will arise. This is a stunning book, definitely the best novel I have read for at least a year. The setting—Japanese occupied Shanghai in the early 1940s. The characters-- a young adolescent Lillia and her father and little sister, refugees from the Nazi-occupied Warsaw. Shanghai was the one place in the world refuges could travel without any papers at all. Lacking papers, many made the long journey to a destination about which they knew nothing and nobody.Dewoskin’s granular and well-informed descriptions of Shanghai in the early 1940s are themselves worth the read, but added is a profoundly moving story of Lillia coming of age, without her mother, in a land and language that is totally strange to her, in a life that was unexpected, and plagued with hunger, cold, illness, and uncertainty.From the refugee processing center to the gentleman’s club Magnifique, Lillia more than survives, provides for her father, mothers her little sister, and skillfully navigates a tapestry of new relationships, with other Europeans, Japanese, Chinese, and Americans. Her strength of character, heroic if flawed, is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Lillia’s mother and father were circus performers back in Warsaw, and Lillia her self is a dancer and artist in similar ways. But the brilliance of this book is the way Lillia emerges as an artist of life itself, with dance and with puppetry of all things, forging from the hardships of refugee life something beautiful and enduring.I cannot say enough good things about this novel. If you read one book this year, you would do well to make it this one.
