Not for me. I was expecting a rich, story. This is a history book. Not my style of reading. Too dry. Sorry!

I have read this book 2 or 3 times and it is still on the shelf where I can grab it. I traveled to Mongolia in 1994 and camped with nomads near the Kherlen River where they told me Genghis Khan was born, and I met some amazing tough Mongolian women, perhaps they were the great great grand daughters of Genghis Khan? For women who like to read about women in history who made history, and perhaps for people who need some help realizing how competent women can be as rulers of empires- this is the book.

Ordinarily, I would put a reaction to another reviewer in a comment after his/her post. But I think that the point I am making is important enough to have its own post. The information I am putting here was taken from Weatherford's Acknowledgments at the end of the book. When younger, I usually ignored introductions, forewords, prefaces, and acknowledgements. It is a severe mistake to do so. Surprisingly important information is often contained within these sections of the book.I have to say that my first reaction to the pen and brush drawings was delight. I was impressed with the apparent simplicity, the grace, and the essence and skill of the drawings--so much so, that I have thought about taking them from the book and putting them in simple frames to hang side by side. I have never felt this way before about an illustration.Afer reading the acknowledgments, I am even more impressed! They are 'name-drawings!' That is, the brushstrokes not only capture the essence of the queen, but her name is also included, coded, into the drawing. Now that is remarkable! And it makes the illustration even more important and impressive. The cover is, to me, appropriate, and well done. Since the book is about the Mongol Queens, it depicts perhaps the greatest/most powerful/effective of them. She has abandoned her headdress and put on a warrior's helmet. She is horseback, as a warrior had to be, and she is in the act of firing her arrow. It says so many important things about her.I don't want to insult the reviewer who was disappointed in the drawings, but I surely think that these are superb and support the book beautifully. I liked the drawings anyway a lot!) but reading the acknowledgements gave me great appreciation of them.

This was a book I could hardly put down! While there were some spaces inbetween the stories of mongol women where the focus was more on the male leaders, the extra information was needed to put the stories of these powerful women into context. Also, a lot of information about these women have been lost over time, so as it is, it is a great representation of the information that remains about them. Overall this was an engaging and delightful book that especially hit its stride in the last 3rd. I would highly recommend this book.

Incredible book with great insights even for a Mongol like myself. In addition to writing so eloquently and making the book a fun read, Jack has done in-depth research where he is able to justify and explain corrections to some of the prior misunderstandings. What was so obviously shown in the book was how Mongol empire rose and fell based on ability to come together or inability to do so. Jack brought to life the key Mongol Queens of history one by one with their circumstances motivations and actions. Interestingly this is almost as much leadership book as is history book.

His book is an eye opener about the reign of Gengis Khan, the local customs of his time, and most of all the role women played in his succession. There was a lot more going on in the world than our ethnocentric Western history education leads us to believe. Great book.

This significantly researched book added an all but forgotten layer to the history of the great Mongol nation established by Ghengis Khan. In the novels I have read about famous Khans from Ghengis to Kublai, their wives were often seen as powerful advisers, but nothing was ever mentioned about the legendary daughters of Ghengis Khan who ruled the Mongol nation when his sons failed to rise to the occasion. Centuries later, Munduhai, a woman or Ghengis's tribe, assumes the reins of power and resurrects the Mongol nation after centuries of decline. I was most impressed at the level of research here and thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the Mongol nation and its bold, determined women Khans.

Fascinating sequel to Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World. Describes with captivating prose the still emerging history of the daughters and female ancestors of Genghis Khan who both preserved and enhanced the Mongol Empire and the Mongol nation.

I was astonished at the amount of censored, deleted or forgotten history there was regarding the Mongol queens and their role in the unification of the Mongol families, clans and nations. The vastly important roles they fulfilled in society and the place they held in the family deserves to be shared. Without these strong women the Mongol empire would not have been as illustrious as it was. Very informative tho sometimes the taste of the dust of the plains was quite strong. Good book.

The book is structured around 10 "missions" that the two took on in the summer of 2001, and lovingly describes their failures (attempting to slog from the Bronx to Manhattan entirely underground) as well as their successes (flying the Jinx flag at the U.N. building). The astonishing, delicious twist is that these operatives are far from the pranksters they might sound like. As if they were touring the Galápagos, they are careful to preserve the dignity of the spaces they explore; they may admire beautiful graffiti, but they'd neverleave any. On missions they wear Men in Black-style suits and sunglasses (the occasional female wears a cocktail dress). Most importantly, though, they know and cherish New York history. They speak so excitedly and reverently of the city--how it was formed and who formed it--that they come off more like endearingly geeky archaeologists than hip adventurers. What appealed to me most was the spirit of the kids involved, that the were getting outside the boundaries of convention and taking risks speaking to the adventurous inherent in humanity. The historical background integrated into each chapter was another pleasant surprise. If you come to this expecting a serious scholarly tome you will be disappointed. But if you are open to getting insight into a group of bright and somewhat irreverent youth you won't be disappointed.

I've read this beautiful book twice and I'm sure I will read it again in the not too distant future. This book is a celebration of a city that inspires you, steals your heart, grinds you down and builds you up again. It is not a 'how to' guide for Urban Exploration, it's the deeply personal account of two young men who live in and love New York City, with the added benefit that they and their male and female friends happen to love to explore their city by going underground, above the water, high on the towers and into abandoned buildings. The descriptions of the city, told from such a unique perspective remind you of why you put up with what you do to live here, or why you should move here at once!

This is truly armchair escapism. As one ages and successfully takes on the image of a responsible adult, what has been left behind is the freedom of adventure, the excitement of possible discoveries, and the accomplishments of being part of the team. "Invisible Frontier" allows one to imagine what might have been if somehow you met up with people who participated in the adventures related in this book.

This is a nonfiction account of a pre-9/11 urban exploration group's exploits in NYC. It's a quick read, and recounts their adventures in locales as diverse as the chthonic Croton Aqueduct to the United Nations and the roof of Grand Central Station. Its authors are erudite and clever, and charmingly present their often silly antics with wit and faux-gravitas.However, I think I came to this book with higher expectations; I had an idea of what actually existed beneath New York City, but was hoping that this group's explorations would reveal a whole underworld beneath the city. Other than abandoned subway stations, the old Amtrak Tunnel that runs at great length along the West side of Manhattan beneath Riverside Park, and the Croton Aqueduct that connects the Bronx to Manhattan, there was little else revealed.Also, they simply weren't as hard core as I had hoped. They were eccentric kids going where they shouldn't, having a blast and recounting their exploits, but they were easily dissuaded from plumbing the depths of their exploration sites. For example, after a couple of hours worth of following the Croton Aqueduct south toward Manhattan, they are stymied by a room filled with waist deep water. Not wishing to endanger their camera equipment, they turn back. When they set out to explore the abandoned City Hall subway station, they never manage to do more than ride past it in an empty subway car. While exploring the tunnels beneath Grand Central (rumored to have twelve subterranean layers), they only manage to scope out one path for about 15 minutes before being sighted and bolting for the surface. Common sense prevails, and while I don't fault them for not wishing to be arrested or hurt, this is a book that promises to reveal the hidden corners of the city, to expose the secrets to the light of day, but often at best manages to only show glimpses of what lies below.

What a breathtaking story of real-life adventurers in the world's greatest city. I loved the way the authors combined personal stories with historical facts. I can't wait to read the sequels. I hope there are two more--every great story comes in threes these days!

This book was so much fun to read. There was a certain amount of excitement reading the authors adventures in the tunnels, bridges and other areas that I would never get to see. Wondering if they would get in trouble,hurt or arrested. Read it.

I picked up a copy of Invisible Frontier after reading about it in a recent urban exploration zine. It was a fun, informative, quick read and thoroughly enjoyable to anyone who admires the urban exploration subculture and the history of NYC's subways, bridges, and urban ruins. Keep in mind that this is one of the first books on the topic, from a crew that was one of the originators of the modern urban exploration idea. They also display a sense of humor that's often absent among modern day urban explorers trying to show how "hardcore" they are. The Jinx guys wear suits while they clamber through the muck, and amuse themselves by sarcastically comparing their exploits to those of historical explorers - a reminder that, amongst all the danger and intrigue, sometimes you have to be able to laugh at yourself.Anyway, onto the book itself. The book devotes a chapter each to the Jinx crew's various explorations. They start in the underground places: the Croton Aqueduct that used to be the main mechanism for delivering water to the city; the old City Hall subway station and its beautifully preserved mosaics; the west side Amtrak tunnel that was the home of the Mole People as well as amazing graffiti murals; and the tunnels underneath Grand Central that supposedly housed a private entranceway for FDR.From there they move to ground-level ruins: the old smallpox hospital on Roosevelt Island; the abandoned ruins of North Brother Island; the Tweed Courthouse (possibly the greatest example of a corrupt public works project in city history); and a bizarre chapter where they (successfully) attempt to raise the "Jinx flag" on the flagpoles in front of the UN.Lastly, they tackle the high places: climbing the 59th st. bridge and also the George Washington Bridge.For each of these chapters, the authors talk about their specific experience - sometimes a riveting success, other times a sobering failure - but the "will they or won't they" aspect leads the book a heightened sense of drama, as well as humor. This book was purchased based on a review at a different web site. Like so many art instruction books this one presumes the reader/artist is already capable of drawing realistically. The text that precedes the projects is OK, but lacks some very important information such as why all the projects drawn with brushes rather than easier to handle tools such as pencils or charcoal, etc. Other missing information includes suggested size to paint rather than leaving the student wonder if a 2" x 2" support is too small or a 8" x 10" canvas is too big (or too small) - or why such large brushes are suggested for such small paintings. The exercises (called projects in the book) could be great refreshers for an experienced artist or just a creativity nudge to get the painting day started. But this book is not for a beginner or novice artist. Believe me - I know - I am a novice, and this book is not helpful.

My 13 year-old and I have had fun painting together. We chose to use 8X8 and 12X12 canvas instead of the recommended 5X5. I think any square size would work. We went out frantically gathering the supplies the author recommended. I couldn't find the list on amazon anywhere. It would have been nice to be able to order everything all at once. For anyone interested, here are the basics that we purchased: #6, 8, and 10 round brushes #4 flat and filbert brushesThe author recommends synthetic brushes. We bought these at the local craft store. Probably could have gotten a better deal on amazon, but we didn't want to wait! Also, I would recommend a couple larger brushes (especially if you are thinking of using a larger canvas like we did). A detail brush is useful too (so you can sign your masterpiece!)The paint colors needed for all of the projects are: Titanium White Mars Black Cadmium Yellow Light Cadmium Orange Cadmium Red Medium Yellow Ochre Unbleached Titanium Ultra Marine Blue Light Blue Permanent Cobalt Blue Burnt Sienna Cerulean Blue Dioxazine Purple Phthalo BlueThe author goes into detail about buying decent brushes and paint. We chose the grade just above the disposable type and have been happy so far. As for the paint, we got the cheapest tubes available at the craft store. I'm sure a serious artist would have paid more attention, but we just wanted to get started!Overall, we spent around $100 total on supplies and the book. Sounds like a lot, but it will provide hours of entertainment for us!

Excellent! I'm new to painting and wanted some simple tutorials that were not technically overwhelming or produced discouraging results because it was too far above my skill level. I'm having a wonderful time painting these short projects! Thank you so much for producing this book. I feel like it's giving me a solid foundation to build on. I bought my paints and brushes in amazon as well and for under $50 (including this book) am ready to paint!

I've painted 46 out of 50 of the lessons in this book (in order) and I love it. The instructions are clear and complete, each lesson is well illustrated and presented in the same thoughtful & thorough way (5 steps, creating each small painting from a blank canvas to the finished product). The book starts out with very helpful suggestions & information about supplies, color (hue, value, saturation), and how to approach painting. The lessons themselves are arranged in 3 chapters in increasing order of complexity so skills learned early can be utilized and improved upon. When I complete the final four lessons I'm going to go back and do every one of them again, which brings me to my only regret - I wish there were more lessons from this author. Maybe he'll create a follow-up??

These 50 little paintings are addictive. I looked at the first painting in the book when I got the book, and rushed out immediately to get some acrylic paints to try it because it looked like something I could do, but it was pretty. I've been painting one almost every day since I got the book and getting better and better. I look forward to painting when I get up in the morning. Some of the paintings in the beginning look pretty simple (but sometimes they're harder than they look!), but they're teaching important lessons. The paintings get progressively more challenging and more detailed as you go through the book. I think almost all of them are very interesting paintings. There's a wide variety of painting styles and types, and I really like that. I've never painted with acrylics before, but I've done a little drawing and watercolors off and on for years.

I am in love with this book! I have cut and prepped my 50- 5 by 5 wood pieces to do the 50 paintings. This is my New Year's resolution to get back into painting and I thought this book would be the book to make this project a reality. I can't wait to get to the painting of the balloon dog and the clothes pin. Not only am I looking forward to learning all the techniques, I can't wait to display them all when they are finished. The step-by step tutorials are easy to understand and the techniques look so interesting.

I expected this to be more of a chemistry book, but it isn't. It's more focused on Earth science and environmental science. As such, it does a good job. It goes through the standard things you would expect like the water cycle, erosion, ocean depth, ice bergs, ocean life, etc. There were some places where it went into more interesting depth, for example, the varying degrees of salinity in different bodies of water. The text is engaging and the pictures are well done. The layout is also impressive.My biggest disappointment was just that so much of it overlapped with so many other science books we have so my kids were a little bored. At this point, they understand the water cycle, that the ocean is deep and that animals live there.The environmental science was more interesting and less commonly found it science books, but didn't interest my kids as much (I think it will as they get older). It did cover topics like drought and rain, global warming (of course!), dams and waste water. I thought these topics were covered in a balanced way.It's a good science book but it may not cover a lot that other books in your library don't - especially if you already have earth science or environmental science books. In that genre however, it is excellent.I would love to see a book focused on some other aspect of water - such as how it's different from other molecules and how unusual it is in the chemical world. And I would have preferred that this book pick a focus - such as water scarcity or humans and water rather than just being called "water."

I've bought this a second time because its my 6 year olds favorite book and he wore out his first one.

I love reading this to my 5 year old son for bedtime. We'll choose a few pages and talk about everything we've learned. I always learn something new too.

There aren’t many books on Plants on Amazon site. This is good book to teach my 4 yr old about Photosynthesis, etc. This book requires adult to read kids.

Bought a bunch of this series for my Grandson for Christmas . . . He loves them so much, I bought the rest for his birthday . . . and his cousins love them so much I am going to have to buy the set for all my kids families.

We got this for a unit study with Harry Potter (through Build Your Library). It has wonderful photography, easy to understand descriptions, and the poster and CD are a great bonus!

(Didn't read the dimensions)It contains lots of basic information on plants, with interesting bits scattered everywhere.The pictures are clean and beautiful.The book comes with a Clip-Art CD, but doesn't even compare to actually looking inside the book. (Very low definition images.) It also comes with a nice folded-poster.Still, overall a very worthwhile buy. I also purchased the 'Insect' book as well and it rates the same.Purchased for $11.85, and got free 2-day shipping with my Amazon Student account.Great addition to our home library. 5 stars.

Very good advice when developing and deploying microservices.

Not worth the money. It's one of those books that constantly points you to a URL in order to learn about different technologies. Defeats the purpose of buying a book in my opinion. Doesn't go in-depth about anything. Hard to see who would benefit from this book.

This book is really good for a number of reasons.1. great introduction to .NET Core - I've done a little with .NET Core but this is making more of it solidify.2. Very current - It's just been published in Sept 20173. I've been wanting a book on MicroServices but something that walks me through building good code examples and this has that too.4. Learning microservices allows me to learn some new architectural concepts.5. The book is written really well too so it is a fast read.6. Microservices are implemented in Docker so I'll finally get to wrestle with that a bit too.Additionally, the introduction to .NET Core is very good because it gives you exactly what you need to try it out without overwhelming at the first parts of the book.Author does a great job of explaining microservices architecture in context of actual working code and best-practices like CI (continuous integration) etc.A fantastic read which provides a lot of value.

very nice to read if Max or Linux is your dev environment. If you are focused on Windows, you're lost after chapter 1 as it does not explain how to use/install docker on the Linux subsystem for Windows.Does "The new Linux subsystem for Windows 10 ...still isn't ideal" (page ix) mean "don't use it, it's buggy" ?Also the fact that Visual Studio comes with a nice Docker integration is completely left out.

This is one of the worst books. It's very brief, lazy and poorly put together. It only touches on the topics, and doesnt lay the concepts out at all. It briefly mentions stuff, and then points you to a url or git repo. Theres no good foundation of the microservice principles. I'm glad I already knew what CQRS/ES was, because the chapter would lose anybody with it's poor and brief information, and complicated and confusing code example. This is how every chapter is. It should have been a 500pg book, not 200.
