Maslow's hierarchy of needs, a pyramid capped by the highest human need of all, the need for, what Maslow famously termed, self-actualization. Since his death in 1970, Maslow's voluminous writings have made him one of the most influential thinkers in counseling psychology. He is a revered father figure to the human potential movement. But few know him as a brilliantly insightful analyst of how to lead people and make organizations more productive. Maslow on Management should change that. In 1962, Maslow spent the summer at an electronics factory that was one of the first to try giving workers a say in organizing production. He watched and kept a journal, later published under the intimidating title Eupsychian Management. The book, which had been long out of print, has been republished with extensive commentaries as Maslow on Management. Some of Maslow on Management is, as Warren Bennis writes in the foreword, "hilariously innocent." Reflecting on the power of well-managed workplaces to unleash creativity, Maslow suggests that the U.S. economy would benefit "if we kept all the factories running at full blast and simply gave things away." Yet his deeper point--that good management leads to good psychological health--is startlingly advanced for 1962, when the business world was still widely thought of as nurturing nothing more than soulless conformity. In this complex book, Maslow offers the best integrated theory of human development I have yet seen. He explains how human development is a result of synergic work and suggests how people with authority, experience and knowledge (managers) can support other people's growth,At first sight, I was baffled to find the book was just a rough sketch with disconnected notes and incomplete thoughts. It is a pity that Maslow did not live long enough to complete the book.On a second and third readings, the full picture began to emerge.The book is like a jigsaw puzzle, but without the guiding picture in the box. I took it as a challenge, enjoyed the ride and learned a lot.I can imagine some people may want something easier and softer.- Francisco Laborde (Fungus)

As psychologist I recommend especially this book! It is a bridge between an 'ethical theory of personality or men' and 'working with others in any organisation or business'. It can be used in 'Human Resource Management'. In the West a 'free human individual' is the piller of a free society and even all civilization, since Aknaton. (In the book Moses by Freud, Aknaton is mentioned as the first individual.) A free human individual creates more revenue for businesses and is much better for all others. It counters man just seen as a machine, rat, animal, subject or moneymaking instrument.

This should be required reading for anyone managing people. If all companies approached management in this way, no one would have a job, people would simply do what they loved and excel at it. Productivity wouldn't be measured, it would be commonplace.

This is one of my favorite management books, especially with the addition of the quotes from current business leaders. Maslow's thoughts on Eusphician management are not often discussed, but are certainly relevant.

Great book, tough read, but a ton of lessons you'll learn about yourself and others. Shipped quick and in mint condition.

Five star reviews? Are you all drunk? This book covers some good material, but several chapters are riddled with errors, sloppy code samples, and repetitive text that make for a very annoying read. Some chapters are well-written, so I suspect the others weren't drafted and edited by the primary author. Also, there are numerous references throughout the book to sample scripts that are supposedly downloadable from the Oracle Press/McGraw-Hill websites. I've scoured those sites and couldn't find any of the noted scripts available for download.Overall, this book left the impression that it was cobbled together in a rush to meet a deadline.

There are quite a few useful Oracle's PLSQL packages are available but not covered in this book.

This book is McLaughlin's best work yet. The lessons in this book are presented so clearly that even if you don't feel adequate in PL/SQL or java you will get a lot out of this book. There are tons of examples and the illustrations are magnificent. One of the things I liked most about this book is that it is direct and to the point. There is no fluff wasting your time. The concepts are laid out as simply as they can be. The chapters about Application security were fantastic. Using the 2012 LinkedIn database breach (among others), the book keeps you interested with real life examples about the importance of security. I would recommend this book to anyone with advanced programming skills, whether you are using PL/SQL or not. The concepts in this book are beneficial to everyone in the field.

This book is a must if you need to learn how to use any of the advanced programming features and techniques in Oracle. It clearly walks you through the process of how to use Java in the database and how to interface with existing eternal libriaries written in both Java and C. Through out the book there is a strong focus on how to write secure applications both in Java and PL/SQL. There are even two chapters dedicated to the topic of application security. This alone is a strong reason for purchasing this book. In addition, this book does a thorough job of covering how to do file I/O using both PL/SQL and Java. It even has a chapter on high speed data transfer for importing and exporting large volumes of data such as in a data warehousing ETL application. I found the chapter on how to use PL/SQL to gather statistics for tuning the performance of your queries particularly useful.The book is very well written and is full of easy to follow examples. It does, however, assumes that you have a working knowledge of the Oracle architecture, PL/SQL and Java. There is an appendix on basic Java if you need a refresher but still feel that you should have had some working knowledge of Java to get the most out of the Java related topics.

It seems Dr Biederman is doing this also quite successfully.Manual spinal procedures are now becoming mainstream in the USA and Australia, and it is good to see Europe follow suit. This book makes an essential addition to the manual therapist's library.

Using both solid research and common-sense anatomical rationale to build the case for spinal care, it clearly explains the absolute need for children and pregnant women to have their spines checked. Being written by medical doctors could be a point of contention for some chiropractors, but the authors seem to keep objective and unbiased.The only criticism I have is that since it is written by medical doctors, the rationale for spinal adjustments is in reaction to an obvious trauma or medical condition. Regular care for health optimization does not seem to be addressed.I still give it five stars for the wealth of information brought together and presented so well.

I thought this book would be helpful to me whilst treating children. Instead it feels a bit like compilation of tenuously related articles on manual therapy in children.

I decided to buy this book based on an NPR radio interview with the author that I heard soon after the book's release. He had such a wonderful speaking voice and delivery that it made me want to buy the book thinking and hoping that his prose would be as beautiful. It is.In addition, having lost my own father when I was barely 21 (although in much less complicated conditions than the author's), any story about fathers and sons always will catch my interest.In the end I couldn't give this a 5-star rating. Something was missing and I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Perhaps it is that, while I can relate to the issue of a lost father and memories, I am not muslim or from the African continent...nor am I a political exile. Therefore, I couldn't relate completely to the author's pain and resolve.What I did get was a good education on Libya, of which I know only what I've seen in the news for the past 30 years. I learned more than I knew about Qaddafi's brutality and of the life of exiles throughout the continent and Europe. The prose is very nice and easy to read....sometimes too easy. I found myself going back to re-read some passages because I had a feeling I might have missed something beautiful or revealing. That was the case more often than I am proud to admit. The author was very successful in putting the reader---at least me---in a situation in which I pictured my father, my family and me in the same situation. It wasn't a pleasant feeling, but it wasn't meant to be. Many of us are very lucky just because we were born in a free country. This book will make you think of how lucky those people are indeed and just how un-lucky many others are.Overall, I recommend this book as a pleasant, informative, powerful and educational read that will make the reader reflect. It doesn't resolve as clearly as I had hoped, but it is not hard to suppose what happened after the book's end.

Interesting as recent history of Libya but too detailed because things that interest author because his relations etc too much for ordinary reader - weighs the book down. While highly praised and prize winning I felt it didn't say anything new about 'returning' everyone who has left their own country and lived elsewhere whether as an exile or as an ex-pat experiences a lot of what Matar experiences. His is intensified by disappearance of his father and terrible torturing etc under Gadaffi but probably no worse than what it is like for hundreds of thousands of current refugees. He was lucky because he went to England for an education and had contacts and one assumes was able to make a living. But good to read thinking of current stateless people.

I loved this book for its integrity and its understanding of Libya and the politics surrounding this country. I did not like it for how impersonal and cold it sometimes felt. Matar is intense. His singular obsession to find out what happened to his father is understandable. To have a father who clearly loved his country above all else is tough to take--and yet, his father is so admirable, and so weren't many others, who had to suffer because Quadafi was a lunatic. There was so much promise for Libya when Quadafi came into power--but because of the seductive reach of power, all goodness disappeared. One thing is for sure--all those US senators that had to have fifty million reports on the Benghazi incident haven't a clue about Libya.

This is a story of a nation in perpetual grieving over the grave tragic losses of precious lives, and the pervasive banality of evil everywhere and all the time. Sadly, this is one of many countries, and one of many family stories in our time and the current cold and intentional denial and rejection of aid by the international community and the leaders of powerful countries. It is a heartbreaking story of humanity, both its survival and repeated defeats, in its perpetual purgatory. The writing is so clear and precise, you can almost see the faces of his family, lovers of literature, theater, music, food, with the same rights and desires that we take for granted, imagine their lives, enjoying love for each other, love for the nature, the desert and the sea shattered by violence, despair, devastation, anxiety, anger.

Reading this book reminded me of the richness reading gives one in life. This book is good literature; and, good literature builds bridges of compassion and understanding by connecting cultures and the experiences of what it means to be human. Matar gives us a heart filled account of a son’s search for his father which is fully present without an ounce of sentimentality - a wonderful accomplishment.

Hisham Matar also writes with great tenderness about family, friends and the country he and his family had to forsake.

This story is autobiographical in the Qaddafi era in Libya but the family live in Egypt. The father is a dissident and spends long periods away from home. On one of these occasions he is kidnapped by the regime. His son, the author of this story grows up through the years of his disappearance, suffers the loss of his father and his mother takes to alcohol to console herself. Many members of the extended family are also kidnapped. They, however are eventually released. Not so for the father and the story ends with the conclusion that he must have been shot in the 1996 massacre in Abu Salim jail which was liberated by the rebels. Gaddafi was overthrown in 2011 after 40 years rule. This is a heart felt story, very well written and holds the tension of the search until the last page.

The author describes his dogged search for information about his imprisoned father with clarity. But at the same time he seems oddly detached. Although there are many times he writes about his feelings, the book is unemotional and he doesn't recount any of the events comprising the actual overthrow of the regime. But it was nevertheless an engrossing book and a good portrayal of the Libyan persona.

About the Author

Hamlyn G. Jones has been Professor of Plant Ecology at the University of Dundee since 1997, where his current research concentrates on aspects of micrometeorology and plant interactions with their environment (especially their responses and adaptations to environmental stresses). A major part of this work involves the development of remote sensing approaches to the study of energy and mass exchange by plant canopies, and the remote study of canopy structure. He has published a major text on 'Plants and microclimate', together with four jointly edited proceedings and over 110 articles in refereed journals. Robin Vaughan moved to the University of Dundee in 1965 as a solid state physicist and in 1991 was appointed senior lecturer in the Electronic Engineering and Physics Division. In 1995 he was elected a Fellow of the Remote sensing Society. He has written numerous books and articles and is now course director of the Dundee MSc course on Remote Sensing, Image Processing and Applications.

Anything you would ever want to know about RS for vegetative analysis, and even what you don't, is in this book. No casual reading, here, I bought it, and use it, as a reference book, which it certainly is.

This publication is very comprehensive and covers a lot of material. As such it takes quite a lot of time and work to explore its many facets. Having only recently purchased the book I still have a lot to explore in it. At this early stage it appears to be the most comprehensive and well organised publication on remote sensing of vegetation on the market. It is also well organised, easy to navigate and well written. It reflects the committment of the authors to an excellent scholarly publication.

Perfect book for understanding the aspects of remote sensing of vegetation. Great for a beginner.

Diana Gabaladon has written a book that touches the heart and mind. I could not put the book down and for the first time in many years I cared about the characters I felt as if there were intimate friends and I could not wait to know what would happen next. Bravo Ms. Gabaldon!

I have been reading this series and saw the first two seasons on Starz - loved that, as well as the books leading up to this one. I have not finished this one but must say I am feeling bogged down by too many details, characters and side-stories. I feel ALL of the Outlander books could use a good bit of editing to pare them down. I think much could be edited out and still have wonderful stories. In The Fiery Cross, I find myself skipping through bits because it is just too, too much sometimes! I do feel Starz has done a terrific job with the TV series and the tendency to get frustrated when things drag because of the excess detail in the books won't stop me from reading them. I just don't understand why an editor wouldn't automatically cut out some of the detail and condense the length. Even holding the books is a chore because they are just too dang thick for comfort! (part 1 and part 2 would be an excellent idea!) That being said, I may change my mind as I get further into the book; have read only the first one-quarter. And don't get me wrong: I AM a fan!.

The story is good because of course it’s by Diana Gabaldon. I’ve read all of the books, this is my 4th time! I like listening because many of the Gaelic phrases and names I don’t know how to pronounce so it’s nice to hear them instead of guessing what they sound like. The reader is excellent. I would recommend this series to anyone and everyone-I know many man who love the adventure and the history. If something is presented of the events taking place in the time period-riots, plagues, uprisings, political happenings, and more-it happened, I’ve checked. Even the most obscure thing that only a historian studying that time period would know, happened. Love, lots of steamy sex, humor, tenderness, violence, adventure on land and sea, magic, believable characters, this series has it all. If you’re not a reader, if you spend many hours in your car driving from call to call, if you’re a busy homemaker, anyone who doesn’t have time to sit and read, get the audio. I have the book too.

i enjoyed the first few books but now the plots are becoming redundant and the outcomes predictable. I LOVE the story of Jaimie and Claire but find it hard to believe that Claire would leave Jaimie for 20 years and stay with Frank. Diana would like us to believe that Claire didn't know Jaimie still lives. They are Soul Mates, Claire would feel him and discover what Frank learned that Jaimie lives and she'd go back through the Stones with Brianna much, much sooner. It doesn't make sense that Claire, an independent, strong minded woman would stay with Frank. Just doesn't ring true. OK, so it's 20 years later, Claire returns to Jaime and now, Diana wants us to believe that Jaimie and Claire can still sleep under the stars, tramp through forests, continue to rough it and not feel their ages of 40+? I was in excellent shape in my 40's, and throughout but I no longer went camping without some comforts that I didn't use in my 20's. Roger and Brianna are OK characters but they aren't charismatic or as wonderful a love story as, Jaimie and Claire. Actually, I'm not that thrilled with Brianna and can't imagine why Roger is so in love with her. Glad so many people like this series but I'm done.

I desperately wanted to give The Fiery Cross 4 glowing stars but I couldn’t. When I say that I’m in love with this series, I mean it but this book failed in delivering the excitement we’ve come to expect from Diana Gabaldon.DG is a talented and flawless writer but this book was mostly about the day-to-day minutiae that bored me to tears. I kept reading because I’m invested in Jamie and Claire. Their relationship is engaging and while these two have settled into daily life…the chemistry is still very much alive.“Sorcha,” he whispered, and realized that he had called her so a moment before. Now, that was odd; no wonder she had been surprised. It was her name in Gaelic, but he never called her by it. He liked the strangeness of her, the Englishness. She was his Claire, his Sassenach.However, there were things in the story I didn’t care about, Jemmy being one of them and Brianna’s lactating breasts were another. I simply did not care for Jemmy’s baby talk and I love kids in stories but I all I wanted to do was stick a pacifier in his mouth! Don’t even get me started on Brianna’s hardening breasts. Yes, I said hardening. *eye-roll* I’m thinking DG must have been pregnant when she wrote this story.It was so frustrating. Frustrating because it was 1,400 pages!!! Nothing was happening, so much trivial crap I didn’t care about was explained and I couldn’t figure out where the plot was hiding, it felt as though I was searching for Waldo!!! But it did get better. The second half was slow to get going as well but that eventually changed around the 60’ish % mark.With that being said, even though there were moments that I loved with great dialogue that only DG can deliver, the story still felt disjointed and boring. *heavy sigh* For those of you that want to read The Fiery Cross…hang in there because it is a tough book to finish but I’m glad I did and the last 10% of the book was AUH-MAZING!! That ending left me with so many questions but I think that’ll be answered in the next book. And based on what I’ve heard, A Breath of Snow and Ashes (Outlander #6) makes up for what The Fiery Cross lacked.

About the Author

Edward Abbey spent most of his life in the American Southwest. He was the author of numerous works of fiction and nonfiction, including the celebrated Desert Solitaire, which decried the waste of America’s wilderness, and the novel The Monkey Wrench Gang, the title of which is still in use today to describe groups that purposefully sabotage projects and entities that degrade the environment. Abbey was also one of the country’s foremost defenders of the natural environment. He died in 1989.

I've read this book a few times now, Edward Abbey truly is an amazing author. This book takes you on a journey through environmental stewards or eco terrorists as some might say. The activism in the name of the environment is riveting and exciting. This is one of those books you stay up through the night reading

I bought this several years ago right around the time the stuff at the Bundy ranch was boiling over. It seemed a good time to have a look at some sort of western libertarian anarchism. What binds Abbey's characters and the Bundy gang was a sense of ownership of the collective but a weird sense. The Bundy people defended grazing on collective land - private benefit of public land without compensation of the public. The gang in the book have a weird sense of protecting the land through destruction, but they aren't steward of the land. One thing that struck me was how willfully they all littered. And on top of all of that, neither the Monkey Wrench Gang or the Bundy Gang were the first ones on the land they claimed to protect through their ownership. The Amerindians are pretty absent from both narratives. As a book, Abby is a good writer, even though I had trouble differentiating between Hayduke and Seldom Seen Smith (not enough difference in the characters, if you ask me). It was good enough that though I kept putting it aside, I kept picking it back up.

The Monkey Wrench Gang holds up well; is still entertaining and thought provoking. All of the characters are flawed, but that may be the point. Those of us who fit well into society are seldom eager to risk our comfortable lives in the service of a greater good. Those of us who are marginalized, however, have less to lose and may be more likely to make political statements and take political actions.The adventures of George Hayduke, Doc Savis, Bonnie Abzug and Seldom Seen Smith as they attempt to fight back against development and the destruction of the West by destroying bulldozers, dams and the egos of their pursuers are cartoonishly entertaining. Today, the idea of an environmentalist throwing a beer can out of a car window seems more than a little odd. In 1975, however, Abby seemed to be combining the mythic image of the Marlborough man with some new age sensitivity to the environment to create characters who both entertain and enlighten and have held up well for 40 years.If you are looking for a light read to entertain you on a flight or at the beach, and have missed it in the past, The Monkey Wrench Gang is a great choice. It is also worth reading to get some historical knowledge and understand where Earth First got some of their ideas. So enjoy the humor, the descriptions of the West and your trip back in time with one of the books that inspired the environmental movement.

I decided to read Monkey Wrench Gang because one book of Edward Abbey's or another was always sitting at my late father's bedside table. My Dad tended to read existential, philosophical novels and was a big fan of Hemingway and Camus. Clearly I had the wrong idea of what Abbey was about. The Monkey Wrench Gang does occasionally wax philosophically, but only in the midst of one character whining or thinking about the bourgeois influence of sanitized American adulthood on the natural environment. Most of Abbey's energy in Monkey Wrench Gang is spent having a good time - following a troupe of 4 troublemakers each shaking off their own shackles of middle-aged boredom to help fight for environmental freedom. But what I found I liked most about Abbey was that, if that was his plot, it's devoid of any sentimentality, any politeness, and even just the occasional whiff of sympathy, even for the characters we care about. At its center, George Hayduke, the beer-guzzling sorta-traumatised vet who never met a can of cheap beer he didn't like, is so fun to watch not because of his drive, but because his drive to clean up the environment seems to come from nothing more than his hatred of anything besides open land, and even then, he'd never be able to put that into words. For a 400+ page book, Abbey's narrative never slags - there's always a race, a crime, or a good yelling match keeping the book moving. And then there's that philosophical sense, which shows up in asides throughout the book, making Abbey's writing a lot like a Vonnegut or Tom Robbins - prone to smart observations that make you like the writer even more than you thought you already did. Take this observation, on women going to bed before men while camping: "The ladies first. Not because they were the weaker sex - they were not - but simply because they had more sense. This is supposed to be one of those 'don't miss' classics. Personally I found it all a bit silly. I have no problem with it's message of protecting the wilderness from the predations of developers, but the characters were caricatures and the plot seemed concocted by the imagination of an idealistic teenager. Perhaps it seemed radical in its day but in our 'age of terror' it just doesn't ring true.
