About the Author

Edward Abbey spent most of his life in the American Southwest. He was the author of numerous works of fiction and nonfiction, including the celebrated Desert Solitaire, which decried the waste of America’s wilderness, and the novel The Monkey Wrench Gang, the title of which is still in use today to describe groups that purposefully sabotage projects and entities that degrade the environment. Abbey was also one of the country’s foremost defenders of the natural environment. He died in 1989.

I've read this book a few times now, Edward Abbey truly is an amazing author. This book takes you on a journey through environmental stewards or eco terrorists as some might say. The activism in the name of the environment is riveting and exciting. This is one of those books you stay up through the night reading

I bought this several years ago right around the time the stuff at the Bundy ranch was boiling over. It seemed a good time to have a look at some sort of western libertarian anarchism. What binds Abbey's characters and the Bundy gang was a sense of ownership of the collective but a weird sense. The Bundy people defended grazing on collective land - private benefit of public land without compensation of the public. The gang in the book have a weird sense of protecting the land through destruction, but they aren't steward of the land. One thing that struck me was how willfully they all littered. And on top of all of that, neither the Monkey Wrench Gang or the Bundy Gang were the first ones on the land they claimed to protect through their ownership. The Amerindians are pretty absent from both narratives. As a book, Abby is a good writer, even though I had trouble differentiating between Hayduke and Seldom Seen Smith (not enough difference in the characters, if you ask me). It was good enough that though I kept putting it aside, I kept picking it back up.

The Monkey Wrench Gang holds up well; is still entertaining and thought provoking. All of the characters are flawed, but that may be the point. Those of us who fit well into society are seldom eager to risk our comfortable lives in the service of a greater good. Those of us who are marginalized, however, have less to lose and may be more likely to make political statements and take political actions.The adventures of George Hayduke, Doc Savis, Bonnie Abzug and Seldom Seen Smith as they attempt to fight back against development and the destruction of the West by destroying bulldozers, dams and the egos of their pursuers are cartoonishly entertaining. Today, the idea of an environmentalist throwing a beer can out of a car window seems more than a little odd. In 1975, however, Abby seemed to be combining the mythic image of the Marlborough man with some new age sensitivity to the environment to create characters who both entertain and enlighten and have held up well for 40 years.If you are looking for a light read to entertain you on a flight or at the beach, and have missed it in the past, The Monkey Wrench Gang is a great choice. It is also worth reading to get some historical knowledge and understand where Earth First got some of their ideas. So enjoy the humor, the descriptions of the West and your trip back in time with one of the books that inspired the environmental movement.

I decided to read Monkey Wrench Gang because one book of Edward Abbey's or another was always sitting at my late father's bedside table. My Dad tended to read existential, philosophical novels and was a big fan of Hemingway and Camus. Clearly I had the wrong idea of what Abbey was about. The Monkey Wrench Gang does occasionally wax philosophically, but only in the midst of one character whining or thinking about the bourgeois influence of sanitized American adulthood on the natural environment. Most of Abbey's energy in Monkey Wrench Gang is spent having a good time - following a troupe of 4 troublemakers each shaking off their own shackles of middle-aged boredom to help fight for environmental freedom. But what I found I liked most about Abbey was that, if that was his plot, it's devoid of any sentimentality, any politeness, and even just the occasional whiff of sympathy, even for the characters we care about. At its center, George Hayduke, the beer-guzzling sorta-traumatised vet who never met a can of cheap beer he didn't like, is so fun to watch not because of his drive, but because his drive to clean up the environment seems to come from nothing more than his hatred of anything besides open land, and even then, he'd never be able to put that into words. For a 400+ page book, Abbey's narrative never slags - there's always a race, a crime, or a good yelling match keeping the book moving. And then there's that philosophical sense, which shows up in asides throughout the book, making Abbey's writing a lot like a Vonnegut or Tom Robbins - prone to smart observations that make you like the writer even more than you thought you already did. Take this observation, on women going to bed before men while camping: "The ladies first. Not because they were the weaker sex - they were not - but simply because they had more sense. Men on an outing feel obliged to stay up drinking to the vile and bilious end, jabbering, mumbling, and maundering through the blear, to end up finally on hands and knees, puking on innocent sand and befouling God's sweet earth. The manly tradition." Observations like that show how punchy Abbey can be in making a point, even is his point is that civilized westerners, to the environment and beyond, have been pretty annoying.

This is supposed to be one of those 'don't miss' classics. Personally I found it all a bit silly. I have no problem with it's message of protecting the wilderness from the predations of developers, but the characters were caricatures and the plot seemed concocted by the imagination of an idealistic teenager. Perhaps it seemed radical in its day but in our 'age of terror' it just doesn't ring true.

Drones have been a hot topic recently, but even thought they've been around for awhile I don't really know all that much about them. To that end, Drones was a really helpful book. It goes over the history of drones and how they're used, both by the military and commercially. To someone like me who knew virtually nothing about drones other than what I see online, the information was really interesting and well organized. I'm inspired to look up more information and learn what I can! My favorite thing about the book is how balanced it is. The author goes into the benefits and potential issues with drones, which makes for a well-rounded read!

The book is a wonderful guide on Drones by Brenda Foster. Drones were originally used for military action but are now used for commercial and personal use. The book started with the brief introduction of drones and moved on to a detail history of drones. Then there are listed some of the advantages of using drones in today’s world. While there are plenty of benefits and uses for drones, not everyone is happy with them. Many people have concerns about their privacy being violated and question the safety of drones.

Interesting book about drones. I had learned a lot from when it was used in wars several years ago, the benefit to transport people and supplying food, etc. It is packed with loads of information. And I seen it used in the tv show "24" with lead star Kiefer Sutherland Jack Bauer. They stopped terrorist from doing bad things to people and places with the drones.

A lot of people are talking about drones lately, so this book is really timely. It presents a lot of interesting information but is an easy-to-read length and format. The book is unbiased, which is really a breath of fresh air since drones are such a controversial topic of late. This book served to fill in some information about drones that I knew nothing about. Fact is right now anyone can own one. For good or evil. And that's a sobering thought.

I didn’t know much about drones but, like many others, see increasing numbers of stories about them in the news. This book opened my eyes to the wide ranging applications for drones, and the security implications that accompany their widespread use. This is a great book for anyone looking to understand more about drones, their uses, and the impact of that use.

I'm pro-drone, and even this report made me shake my head. If this book didn't claim to be unbiased, it'd be a fine short book, but it does claim to be unbiased. Unfortunately, it's all just fluff.The biggest argument against drones is privacy issues about how they can spy on anyone, anywhere, nearly forever. The author's recommendation? Paint the drones. Here is a line taken from the Privacy section: "... are hopeful that those opposed to them won’t mind so much if they are brighter in color or more visually appealing." What does this have to do with privacy? Nothing, but that's what the book recommends to help with "privacy" and then moves on.The author ends with the claim that instead of worrying about your rights, a "small amount" of personal rights should be given up: "... hope that citizens would be willing to give up a small amount of personal privacy in order to live in a location where there is less crime, less drug activity, and less risk to everyone" and that "[n]oise and privacy issues are common complaints. However, what [drones] offer is well beyond such complaints."For a book that claims to be unbiased, it seems to offer a lot of government-approved statements while dismissing the entire other side of the argument. This book, based on St. Teresa of Avila's Interior Castle, is written for the everyday person in today's world. It is easy to read and understand. This book is an inspired masterpiece and is ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I'VE EVER READ. This book opens your eyes and helps you gain insight, increasing your awareness of God and how God works in your life. You must be sincere, humble, and committed to finding out who you are and what you are to do with your life to undertake the spiritual exercises in this book. You will learn to be honest with yourself and how to connect with your soul as your moral compass. I have changed and the direction of my life has changed as a result of reading and following the soul work in this book. A word of caution, the profound changes that you will make in your life as you enter the "castle" of your soul are fraught with a lot of challenges that will require perseverance. But you will reach new heights and learn much to cope with ambiguities in life to find your path to God.

As a person who has been on a serious spiritual path for many years, this book has been life changing for me. Caroline Myss does for Teresa of Avila's "Interior Castle" what Marianne Williamson has done for "A Course in Miracles". The practices for deep prayer are insightful and practical as well as sacred. I am on my sixth time through it since I picked it up in Nov 2014 after my brother died. It is an essential book for me, kept permanently on my reading table.

I gave Entering the Castle, by Caroline Myss, five stars because of what I have gotten out of it. For a little more than the last year, I have been studying A Course In Miracles (ACIM) which is quite challenging by itself. However, I see Entering the Castle as another vehicle for uncovering layers of my past "stuff" in a perhaps easier way. Her descriptions of reptiles and drawbridges and the castle help to make the process of lightening burdens of the soul interesting and inviting which is no easy task. She bases her writing on ideas that came from St Theresa of Avila, which is intriguing. With each writing exercise, I have been pleasantly surprised at new discoveries about myself, even after years and years of writing and praying. I highly recommend this book to anyone willing and courageous enough to dig deep into the bowels of his or her castle to reap great rewards.

This book does take a while to get into it, this is true. And it is not just for Catholics it is for a Christian or one on a spiritual journey to understand what the castle experience is all about. Once I began this book, it was hard to put it down. Each day, I looked forward to reading this book to completion. Each chapter caused me to yearn for more as I loved going to each part of the castle to the different levels. What a spiritual journey this book is!What I also found helpful was I ordered the CD audio (abridged) book for Entering The Castle and loved this one so much I downloaded it to my MP3 player and listen to it often. You can also find on Amazon the unabridged version of Entering The Castle CD and the audiobook as well. For me, I found the abridged one online at a low cost and it is not as long as the unabridged (lecture) one.For those who find this this book is rather long, may I suggest the CD for Entering the Castle. It is so easy to listen to the the abridged book this way.

The past decade has led me to undertake deep and intense soul work. I found the door to my inner castle through both Teresa of Avila and the masterful writing of Caroline Myss, a true mystic without a monastery. It takes brutal honesty and a sincere heartfelt desire to enter the Castle and visit its many rooms. Self-refection defeats self-deception. This is NOT a new-agey book(five steps to complete spirituality). It is worth the time, the effort, and dedication to commit to and complete all the mansions and its multiple rooms.I feel invigorated, humble, joyful and delighted in life! My connection of my soul to God? Mystical, infinite, sacred, clear and loving.

What a wonderful book that I will use for the rest of my time here on earth. There are so my insights in this book. I can be still because I know God is with me. And the Kindom of God is here, it is within us.

This book is one of my personal favorites in consciousness expansion and spiritual/personal evolution. I have both the book and the cds, and I especially love the cds, as Caroline leads you through meditations based on Teresa of Ávila's work. I've had amazing shifts in consciousness as a result....but, not just from reading the book. You have to do the work of "entering the castle" consistently. But, if you are willing to make the effort, the depth of the awakening process and personal exploration that this system can open you to can be quite profound.

A rigorous guidebook for the contemporary mystic. I've been working with this book for years now. It is absolutely invaluable. You can read it straight through or open it up at any point and you will not fail to be moved and enlightened. It's an incredible combination of classic Catholic mystical practices and contemporary wisdom - a marriage between St. Teresa of Avila and Caroline Myss. Love it. A must read for any contemporary contemplative or spiritual seeker.

I do like these Texas boys. I do get tired of them calling their dad “father”, and some of the other old style wording Ali has in these Texas Dawson brothers/sister. Also I missed not even getting a little hint about the new baby that is on its way.Now, the two main characters are good, but they didn’t jump off the pages at me. Yes they had chemistry, but I just felt like it was lacking a bit. I will definitely be reading the next book though. I do love the Dawson family.My only question, do the secondary characters get a shot a love sometime? I’d love to see some of them get their HEA.

I had previously read the other Dawson Brothers books and enjoyed them so I was looking forward to reading Connor's story. He's all about family. He's taken on a lot of responsibility on his family ranch and is trying to help his younger brother grow up and move past his drinking and fighting ways. He meets Lydia and instantly is taken with her and wants more. Because of his family's reputation he has a difficult time convincing her to give him a chance. Luck would have it that Connor's sister convinces their dad to let her redecorate some of their house and the company she chooses to use is none other than the one Lydia is a designer for. There are plenty of ups and downs in this story, past hurts to overcome, growing up to be done, and being honest with one another. The story moves along well and kept my interest throughout.

What woman can resist a bad boy that grows up to be a good man? Connor Dawson has sown his fair share of wild oats in his youth, but he doesn’t want to be remembered as that reckless hot-headed kid anymore. A dance, a kiss, and a slap across the face suggest that maybe he hasn’t grown up as much as he thought. I loved that we got to see a softer side of the Dawson family in this book. Especially that we got the chance to know Abi a little bit better too. Lydia has so many hidden depths and she keeps Connor on his toes. I wasn’t a fan of how she holds the family’s reputation against him, but I get that small towns have long memories and can cherish grudges like gold. I can’t wait to see the rest of this family find their happy ever afters.I received a complimentary advanced copy of this book from the author.

He and his brother goes a dance and he sees Lydia and their eyes meet. They dance but he kisses her and she slaps him! They have attraction but she remembers his reputation and thinks he’s not changed. But she ends up helping decorate at the ranch and this puts them in close proximity and sparks will fly! She goes to the small town of Safety, TX with her best friend. Connor and Lydia meet at the dance hall but something happens. Wonderful characters and it was great getting another glimpse into the Dawson family. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

Connor has a reputation with the ladies but from the moment that he meets Lydia at a dance he is drawn to her even if their first meeting didn’t go smoothly.Lydia is an interior designer who has been hired by Connor’s sister to renovate part of the family home. The first thing I noticed about The Art of Blizzard was it's weight. This is one big, hefty tome.Chock full of full color art from front to back, this book is amazing. It covers the Warcraft, World of Warcraft, Diablo and Starcraft series. I have been taking my time going through it, because a lot of the artwork has notes on the background from the artists or other Blizzard staff that oftentimes sheds an interesting or amusing tidbit that you may never have known...like the Pit Lord's teeth were based on Gary Busey's teeth.I own a number of art books for anime and video games, and I have to say the quality of the book is top notch. Quality heavyweight paper, sewn binding, many full or double page portraits in vibrant color.I have spent about 3 hours reading it tonight after opening it for the first time. Looking at the beautiful details in everything and at times the evolution of things and reading all the little side comments, has certainly captured my attention.If you are a fan of any of Blizzard's games or enjoy good fantasy art, I cannot recommend this book high enough. I look forward to reading more tomorrow. Absolutely beautiful, and worth every penny.

I was always peripherally aware of Warcraft, Diablo, and Starcraft since the 1990s, but I'd never really delved into them until after purchasing this book. Man, did I miss out on some great characters and awesome art. Well, since I got this thick, beautifully illustrated tome for under $50, I've been searching online for the backstories to the characters and their universes. If I were pressed, I would have to say that Starcraft is my absolute favorite of the three. All of the art, from the pencil drawings, pen & ink, and fully painted illustrations are breathtaking, many of them in the style of the heroic illustrations of Earl Norem and Joe Jusko. This is the kind of art that inspires me to keep on creating. This book is worth every dollar I paid for it and I greatly recommend to anyone who loves great fantasy and science-fiction/space opera artwork. Whether you're an artist, a gamer, or a fan, this magnificent book should definitely be added to your collection while it's still in print and available at less than cover price.

This book is in great condition showed up earlier then I expected and the artwork inside is beautiful! I got this as a gift for my boyfriend but I know he will love it all the art is so cool to go through and see how they were done! The seller of the book is great they emailed me just to make sure I got it and was happy with it:) It is worth every penny its good and thick full of different blizzard art!

Love this book, brought back tons of memories for me. I am biased as I worked at Blizzard many years ago during the making of a lot of artwork featured in this book. From what I've seen this book is missing tons of artwork, there's soo many people that made art used in these games that left Blizzard along the way and didn't get included this. It's sad to see such little consideration for the rest of us but also not really a surprise. Beyond that I absolutely loved seeing all this old work again, seeing it evolve from crude sketches to full rendered gorgeous work is super inspiring. Reminds me to always keep drawing! BFD!

This is my first review for anything, so that alone should say something...Let me start off by saying I own all of the blizzard art books that are available. From The Art of Warcraft to the Art of Pandaria, art of the TCG, Diablo3, SC2, Behind the cinematic process, and now this one.Quality: This book is great quality, better than any of the previous publishings. Its big. Like text book big. Except instead of math, or biology, its full of badassery from the minds of the artists that shape the worlds made at blizzard. Although its only 375 pages, it still feels like a mighty tome. The pages are nice and thick. The binding is tight and feels like it can take some abuse. The dust jacket fits perfect and doesnt slip as im looking through the book, which annoys me about a lot of art books. The pages are full of vibrant glossy pictures, most of the paintings are nice and big and really show off the detail.Content: I was pretty hesitant to order this book originally. I think 45 bucks is a great deal since the base price is 75, but since i own all of the other art books i was concerned i was going to spend that 45 bucks on a shiny new book with all the old artwork. Which it essentially is. However, Im glad i ended up purchasing it because there is actually a lot of previously unreleased art along with a some additions of old art i had seen before but had not been previously published. For example, there is some old artwork i have seen on box coveres, or free trial disks, or free trial flyers, that ive never seen published in another book. The majority of those pieces are actually blown up to a nice size you can take the time to appreciate. There is old artwork that i recognize from the original game play instruction books, especailly from star craft and diablo. Which is awesome because those instructions are long gone and forgotten, but the art is now available in this book. I read some of the other reviews and people were complaining about how there was no new art and screw blizz for not adding anything new. They clearly didnt even take the time to look at the book. Besides the stuff i just mentioned, there is a section entitled, Fallen Games, which includes 17 pages full of concept art for games that never went into production. 17 pages of Metzen and Samwise sketches. Amazing. Theres also a chunky section of art that was done for company holiday cards. Ive seen some before, but most are new to me and are pretty hilarious. These pieces are some of the best because you really see the character and personality of the artist coming through the paintings. Additionally, there is a handful of random sketches and paintings added to each of the other sections. Layout is pretty good with most pages. I also enjoyed that there are some comments from the artists on a good majority of the pages. Its cool to read their thoughts about the artwork and the company, especially reading stories about their experiences through the early days of Blizzard. There is a chapter in here for all the major blizzard franchises, so for someone who doesnt own any of the other art books, you get a broad range of the best art work.Overview: This is an awesome book. Its big, Vibrant, and Detailed. It includes a decent amount of unreleased and unpublished artwork, at least enough to satisfy a customer like myself who already has the previous art books. The commentary is great, and gives good insight on the creative minds that forged Blizzard. Books like this always make me appreciate the thought and effot that went into making these games. its also very inspiring for an aspiring artist. I have no complaints, and am very happy with the purchase.

I own literally every "Art of" book produced by Blizzard, and somehow this incredible tome manages to showcase so much art I have not seen before!I was skeptical that this book would just repeat what I already owned, but instead it had a vast amount of new material by my favorite Blizzard artists.The book is massive in size and the paper and printing is as high quality as the artwork within.I highly recommend purchasing this book.

Interesting and very visual story of the preparation for the moon landing of 50 years ago. For those wanting the back story of how astronauts trained for the moon walks, read this brief, but informationn-filled book.

Nearly 50 years after the Apollo moon landings, after all the books written about it, you might imagine that nothing new could be said about it. But astronomy historians Kevin Schindler and William Sheehan have given us a fascinating look at a mostly unknown chapter of the story. The astronauts did some of their most important geology training in the varied and famous landscapes of northern Arizona, at Meteor Crater, at the Grand Canyon, at Sunset Crater National Monument, at an artificial moonscape blasted out of a lava field, and at Lowell Observatory. At first the astronauts were bored with learning geology, until their tutors decided to take them for a two-day hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, which got them hooked on geology. Schindler and Sheehan have dug up some very rare (indeed, unknown) photos that show the astronauts figuring out everything they would need to know on the moon.This book is a must for any Apollo history enthusiast.

This is a good book if you're looking for an overview of Tesla and Edison but it doesn't go into as much detail as other books on the two inventors.

Good comparison between the two

Someone once said that honesty is the best policy. I’ll admit I knew very little about Tesla. But, after reading this book, now I know much more about the man . The Captivating History Series just gets better each week.The number of patents Tesla had is just astronomical. The feud with Edison seemed to be kinda friendly in a way but both men helped to make the country better electrical wise so to speak. Also , Tesla being from Croatia proved the worth of immigrants playing a significant role in American inventions . As a side note Patriots coach Bill Belichick ancestry is from Croatia.A very remarkable man Tesla was .So , if you want to know more about this man & his with then this is the book for you. Once again, kudos to the Captivating History staff on providing quality books filled with so much information.

This book starts with "The War of the Currents." It explains about Nikola Tesla and his fight to have AC, alternating current, be the standard in America. While Thomas Edison was in favor of DC, direct current. It was interesting to find out that Nikola was actually hired by Thomas in 1882 to repair DC electrical systems for Continental Edison in Strasburg and Paris.It was interesting to learn about each of their childhoods. I didn't remember that Nikola Tesla was born in Croatia and immigrated to the United States. It was very surprising to me how much he had learned, what he created and the inventions that he improved. A family history was given for Thomas Edison that was completely unknown to me.It took me several hours to read this book. I really enjoyed reading about how much both of these men advanced technology through their lives.Buy this book, you won't regret it!

The comparison between Edison and Tesla was amazing. Edison was more of an idea man and Tesla was a genius. Just the difference in their thought process was astounding. Tesla was brilliant and Edison was a hack.

An exceptional book about two famous men - Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison. This book should be required reading in the school system.

Two intelligent men whose imaginations gave quite a few inventions that made life better for mankind.
