Great book for me as I am interested in cosmetic chemistry, formulations, etc. It will teach you a lot! And Leslie Baumann is a great dermatologist. I would love to work with her on some cosmeceuticals.

The information in the book is rather undetailed. It does, however, cover most of the standard ingredients and gives much interesting stuff to read. In my point of view books in this price category should be a bit thicker than 400 pages; other scientific books I use for my studies are three to five times as thick. Nevertheless I like the book and it does indeed give useful information about cosmetics in general.

This book is very useful, and information is up to date. Some cosmeceutical books doesn't include now frequently used ingredients and explanation. The information provided in this book is quite well-rounded. The best introductory book I have so far.

A thoroughly written book ,whoever is interested in cosmeceuticals must use this book as a reference always is very helpful in my esthetic practice.

The author's straightforward and unbiased approach toward skin care makes this an excellent reference text. The well-placed overviews, such as those on pigmentation, aging and acne, combined with chapters on, for example, skin structure and cosmetic labeling, lift this text beyond its encyclopedic nature.

As a beauty writer, I consider this book my new bible. Each cosmeceutical ingredient has its own entry and each entry is packed with useful information and references. Entry sections include: source, history, chemistry, oral uses, topical uses, safety issues, environmental impact, formulation considerations, usage considerations, background and more. I will say this - we don't find out what V.F.D. actually stands for, which is disappointing.The Baudelaires are on a boat with Count Olaf when a storm strands them on an island with very, very strong connections to V.F.D. and the past. The leader Ishmael (whose name bothered me) has a strong influence over the islanders and I didn't trust him from the start. Everything from around the world washes up on the island.Everything.The ending was strange and sad. It wasn't anticlimactic, but it wasn't satisfying. There is an epilogue (chapter 14) that wraps things up a little more but even so....I want to know the answers the siblings read about! I did enjoy finding out who Beatrice actually was.Who Lemony Snicket really is.that was quite interesting.

This story I really didn't expect to end so abruptly. Maybe it was Lemony leading me to think otherwise despite his constantly telling us that we should stop reading of we expected a happy book. But it wasn't a bad ending, just not what I figured and ended too quickly that I felt like many of the mysteries weren't revealed, or maybe I missed them.

The Series of Unfortunate Events books started off quite unique and fascinating. However, as the series went on, I noticed at least a couple of repetitive elements that became cause for frustration. This book was not without its share of those frustrating elements.The first of these was the constant warnings to "put this horrible book down". To be honest, after twelve other books--and was it just me, or did the frequency of the warnings increase--I had no desire to hear this warning rephrased. Whereas, it was humorous the first five or ten times, by book "The End", it was simply something that caused frustration.Also, I found the lists of examples the author gave to illustrate his point got longer and longer, and also more numerous, as the series neared completion. It was almost as if the author had to include a certain number of words, due to contractual obligation. In "The End", there is more than one list covering an item for each letter of the alphabet, if I recall correctly. I began to skim through certain sections of these books. (And, lo and behold, in one section of "The End", the author attempts to catch readers who are doing just that.)Also, whereas other books in the series, when they did portray events that might be disturbing to younger readers, portrayed them in such a ridiculous way as to be obviously comical to any child who was of an age to read them himself, this last book contains a death that occurs as a result of an all too real possibility--childbirth.There is also the ending of the book itself, which, to its credit, is much unexpected, but may leave the younger readers quite disturbed. (As it was, my fifteen year old daughter couldn't stop talking about how upset she was with the ending.)This series is excellent for teaching vocabulary, and this book was no exception, but the other lessons this book tries to teach may not be what children are looking for when they reach for the escape usually found in a good book."The End", and the entire series, after reading the last page, leaves you feeling unsatisfied--incomplete! "That's it?!" is what I kept thinking to myself. The lessons, the author's points, are accurate and well made, but I really, really, really, really (a little Snicket there) don't read fantasy to have such "truths" imparted to me--and I don't think my children do either.Both I and my fifteen year old daughter wish we could have the hours we spent reading this series back, due to the way it all wrapped up in this book, "The End".

I loved the last line of this book. It fit perfectly with the whole series and summed up the whole series. I would have liked to have seen more of some characters, but I liked where this last installment of the series took the Baudelaires. I loved how you finally figure out where the name of the series came from and who it involves. I've never seen an author make up a sort of pen name and then integrate that into the books. I think this series was well written even though some of the plots were a little over redundant. All and all I'm glad I stuck with the series till the end of "The End" even when I wanted to put the books down (as Lemony Snicket has said) before the end of "The End."thank you for your time,Loran

PLOT: In this book, the Baudelaire orphans are shipwreched with Count Olaf onto an "abandoned" island far away from civilaztion and meet a stranger with a certain book who turns out to be more important that you would think. Without spoiling anything, all that I'll say is that the harpoon gun and the Medusoid Mycelium return, and that there's a Chapter 14 (epilogue). Plus, a friend from one of the earlier books is back - but you'll NEVER guess who!! Lastly, let me tell you that at a certain part of the story, there's a Biblical reference that is very interesting to see how Daniel Handler/Lemony Snicket portrays in literature. I think that's it's safe to say that The End was very expecteded by all Snicket fans, but that there was a bit of disappointment when people actually read the book. Well, as far as I know, it's all based on opinion becasue even though some people hated the book, others (including myself) enjoyed it even more than the other twelve! True, the sugar bowl mystery was not resolved, but clues in other books hint to its contents. The VFD mystery is in fact solved, but the reader must pay close attention to what Lemony Snicket says. When you get to the end of the book, the identity of Beatrice is the best you'll love to read because it was so unpredictable (although The Beatrice Letters (A Series of Unfortunate Events) gives you clues). Overall, if you've read all of the books in the series - do not even think twice about reading this one...just do! The cover says it all: this is a very "unfortunate" book. IT IS ABSOLUTELY GREAT (specially Count Olaf's hilarious and unique disguise)! One more thing: Kit Snicket gives birth (I am not sure whether this is a spoiler or not becasue it was kind of obvious that it would happen in the last book, but it was still worth mentioning). The World Is Quiet Here.

An excellent book for kids, and teenagers. I would even recommend this to adults if they want something fun and whimsical. Although something to keep in mind this is the last book in a very long series, so read the first 12 books first.

Najwa Zebian is a Lebanese-Canadian author, speaker, and educator. Her passion for language was evident from a young age, as she delved into Arabic poetry and novels. Like a fine wine, Mind Platter shouldn’t be hurried. It should be savored, page by page. An intriguing mix of poetry, philosophy, and affirmation, Zebian is clearly well beyond her years. I flagged too many pages to count, but “The Power of Words,” “Educate Me” and “Choose” were star standouts.

Eight children, all raised in brothels in Calcutta's red light district, display their work-colorful photographs of the family members and strangers who populate their lives and of the streets and homes which they inhabit-in this companion volume to the Academy Award nominated documentary Born into Brothels. While the poverty that these children experience is always present in the images, the photographs diverge from the expected sordid scenes; instead they capture a wide variety of moods and circumstances. The images-from a shot of a young girl apathetically stretched out on a car to a sweeping panorama of the rooftops of Calcutta to a close-up self-portrait of an exuberant girl yelling at the camera at dusk-appear impressively professional. The children capture the textures surrounding them beautifully, often with a seemingly intuitive sense of composition. The film the book accompanies follows the story of Briski's attempts to teach photography to these children, who, she says, have "little possibility of escaping their mother's fate or for creating another type of life," and this volume includes writing by both Briski and the film's co-director, as well as stills from the documentary. About the Author

Zana Briski studied documentary photography at the International Center of Photography, New York. In 1995 Briski made her first trip to India, producing a story on female infanticide, and returned in 1997 to begin a project on the prostitutes of Calcutta's red-light district. She has received numerous fellowships, including an Alicia Patterson Foundation Fellowship and a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, and awards, including the first prize at the World Press Photo contest. She has conducted a series of photographic workshops with children of prostitutes in Calcutta since 2000. The children's photographs were auctioned at Sotheby's in New York in 2001 and presented in Amnesty International's 2003 calendar. In 2002 Briski and codirector Ross Kauffman received grants from the Sundance Institute, the Jerome Foundation, and the New York State Council on the Arts for their documentary film on the children of Calcutta's prostitutes, Born Into Brothels. Briski is the found of Kids with Cameras, a nonprofit organization formed to empower marginalized children worldwide through learning the art of photography. She lives in New York. Kids with Cameras is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering children through photography. The organization changes children's lives by teaching them the art and skills of photography on an individual basis, and provides support for their general education.

Beautiful book. Watched the documentary and then bought 8 of these books as gifts for my socially conscious friends.

Born into Brothels shows what can happen when children in desperate circumstances are given the opportunity to talk about their lives by making pictures. The pictures that the young people make provide evidence that a camera in the hands of a child can be an empowering device that provide the voice that they might otherwise not have. A powerful testament to the power of photographs and the power of pictures.

A stunning 'coffee table' type book with very serious content. This book makes a solid 'companion' piece to the documentary Born into Brothels. I will use both for a college course on gender. I would suggest viewing the documentary first, but I believe this book will also stand on its own.

I bought this because I wanted to preserve my impressions after viewing the DVD. The DVD was exceptional as is the story of these children and how quick they were to pick up a camera and be able to do something with it. I'm still working on that. This is a nice companion to the DVD but if I had it to do over again I would probably pass.

My advanced-placement high-school seniors recently read and discussed George Bernard Shaw's play MRS. WARREN'S PROFESSION, which explores British class structure, the roles open to turn-of-the-last-century women, and the morality of prostitution. Their own strands of thought were largely theoretical; however, after seeing BORN INTO BROTHELS last Friday evening and immediately buying the companion book, this Monday I was able to present some concrete images to my students of the horrors of slum-living and prostitution in Calcutta. The photos here are beautiful, heart-wrenching, intelligent, savvy, and fraught with layers of meaning. It is clear that the lives of these Calcutta youngsters are a far cry from the lives of suburban Americans. One of the functions of literature is the engendering of empathy for those whose experiences are far different from our own. While Shaw's play is insightful, these images from India had an immediate, powerful effect on kids raised more on television and video than on the written word. Ms. Briski is to be commended for her compassionate work and for trying to raise public awareness about the plight of millions of young people across the planet. One can only wish that even more could be done to ease the horrors of the lives of these impoverished youngsters and their families.

Great book about a vanished time of private citizens protesting encroaching government regulation on cars and driving by holding an all out illegal coast to coast race.As a child I had long family summer road trips in the early 1970s through early 1980s. Early on it was cheap gas ("Pushed a some dollar bills into the attendants hand to pay for the fill up.")- later more costly, not yet completed so still unconnected interstate highways, the 55 mph speed limit, no seatbelt laws, big bench seat cars, no carseats (children fighting over who could laydown across in the rear seat's back window package shelf in the sun ), Dad and Mom sipping a cold Coors while driving down the highway ("Son, hand me a beer from the cooler in the back seat."), laying down across the front seat with your feet sticking out the open passenger window, no cross country heavy tractor trailer traffic (until later deregulation), no interestate exit villages with generic nationwide gas stations, chain hotels and restaurants, just mom and pop local two pump stations, small one story motels and little locall greasy spoons, coin pay public toilets in the big stores and public places, every store and town shutting down and rolling up the carpet at 8pm to 10pm at night, no 24 hour TV, no cell phones - not even easy long distance calling, etc, etc, etc,Yup, this book is about open road history and the race that happened. I purchased this book after having read some old Car and Driver articles about it in the library, on mircrofiche no less, back in the late 1980s. The book did not disappoint me.

As the events that were chronicled in the book occurred when I was still playing with Matchbox cars, then as I grew I saw them told of in the several movies made about these legendary events, I was very excited to read the story "from the horses mouth" so to speak. It was a great pleasure to learn not all of the craziness depicted in the movie were not just from the minds of the Hollywood screenwriters but had some basis in the crazy adventure that these guys really ran. I started driving in the 55 mph era and I still clearly remember long road trips with my parents where we would not see another car for minutes to 1/2 hour or more in the late 70's so I understand how this could have been accomplished. The fact that this really happened is hard to fathom now but it was a great trip down memory lane.A great read - don't worry about the minor faults highlighted by some of the other reviewers this is a history told by the man who lived it and if you have a fleeting interest in the subject I highly recommend the read.

Yates was an old-school auto journalist who paid his dues and ground his knuckles down racing, writing books, and editing and writing articles for "Car & Driver." His sections in this book chronicling his own runs are great, but what's really special about this book is that the author had the experience, knowledge and connections to sit back, take the focus off himself, and let the other people who participated in the races tell their own stories, in their own words. You get a real diversity of perspectives that way, and that makes this book a quick and entertaining read, with plenty of details, logistics and hilarity.

Imagine racing across the USA and first to arrive wins!I remember and lived through the 55 MPH maximum speed limit years. During those years, I received my share of warnings and tickets.Think of those years and sympathize with us who/drove high powered motorcycles/automobiles. Think about how difficult and boring it would be if you drove coast to coast and had to keep it at or below 55 mph. Ugh!I have always been a fan of the Cannonball movie; great laughs. A few years ago I had the fortune to meet and become friends with Dennis "Mad Dog" Menesini. While Dennis and crew did not win, they did receive the "Friends of OPEC" award. Needless to say, I have enjoyed his tales and him sharing his magazine and newspaper articles.The book brings together the bits and pieces I have heard and read through the years. A pleasure to read. No socially redeeming value but great entertainment.

This is a great slice-of-Americana read. Cannonball is especially good because Yates, a master writer himself, allowed fellow competitors to pen their experiences in their own words. It's like spending a cold winter night with a dozen or so of your best friends.The writers/participants were pretty hard on the cops who were just doing their job. I'm a former road-racer having run a couple of thousand mile "races" in a 1960 Corvette. These were all during the early 1960s before any interstates were open and I averaged 63 MPH. It took a few years, but I did figure out, it's more fun to be the chaser than the chasee. Driving the latest "Police Package" sedan and wearing a "city-kitty" uniform is a real kick. Sure it's exhilarating running high speed and trying to stay away from cops, but cops get to go fast, plus the added excitement of not knowing if the speeding car contains Cannonballers, murderers or . . . .Cannonball is not only well written, but completely believable unlike The Driver, a not believable accounting of a similar race by the egocentric Alex Roy who used support vehicles including a plane to make his alleged run.

Brock Yates writes a book detailing his creation, his legend, his race. Of course its excellent! If you have even the slightest interest in the Cannonball then read this. Even if you have only seen the movie this book is worth reading. I could not put it down. It was not some unknown ending as with a novel that kept me reading (I already knew the basic story about the race) but the details that could only come from Yates and the others who participated in it. If you are any type of car guy you will enjoy this book.

You are a liar and never should have made this book. All lies. We're you forced to take showers because you never cleaned your self. You pulled guard once and claimed some one tried to rape you when your partner was In a porta potty. Not once were you on a convoy that was attacked, EVER! What happens when you can't drive straight? Your mirror gets broken. It took me over 3 years to get my bonus because you NEVER did your job! The same month you were fired, I had your replacement file the paper work and it was instant. You were the only 350lb women who somehow scored over a 290 on her PT test. Which was the EXACT reason why you were given a DISHONORABLE discharge while deployed. You couldn't do a single sit up, push up, and couldn't roll your self 2 miles in under 30 minutes. You lied on all of your PT tests signing your self off with near perfect scores. It's a book about the cold reality of the personal price paid for freedom for all of us. It should be required reading for every American.Though words will never be enough, I want to extend a big THANK YOU to the author.

The bad reviews here are all from people who were there with her and know the truth. The good reviews are people who either don’t know her, weren’t there or are fake. The rest of us kept serving until retirement or are still in. She was dishonorably discharged. That says it all.

How dare you Chambers try to profit off Iraq. The worst soldier in the theater. A SFC who pretended to be sick or hurt almost everyday. A SFC who couldnt make decision and made every mission she was on take hours longer than without her. A SFC female who wouldnt take showers in the middle of summer and had to be ordered to. Last and certantly not least we have a Iraq veteran who claimed she was attacked in the motorpool on guard duty to get out of a P.T. test with a female SGM. I would have fought and died next to any member of that company, except SFC Chambers, who would have been sick that day im sure. Ill bet none of the truth ended up in that book. Want to know the truth ask any member of the 478, ANY OTHER MEMBER!

Your driving a 68ft truck with 30 tons of cargo through a hostile fire zone. Youve been driving for hours and hours cause you cant shoot your weapon, heck you barely lift it. Theres oncoming traffic but your so tired you can barely control the truck. You swerve into trafic and your mirror explodes what do you do. If your SFC Chamber you make up a lie and you just keep driving. Like the time you drove through the army ten miler cause you wouldnt listen to anyone, or all the times you damaged vehicles, cause like shooting you couldnt drive either. Isnt that right drill seargent, oh werent you stripped of that to cause you LIE!

This book makes you look at life and start appreciating our freedom and those that are fighting for it. We all take things for granted. Every American needs to get off the couch and the bad tv news and read this book. Thankyou B.G. Chambers, I salute you.

Ive had the privalege of having everyday conversations about the war and his mothers experiences before i even knew about the book.
