I bought the book after seeing the author do an interview on NPR radio. Finally finished it last night. WHOA! This is a fantastic read! A compelling narrative written by Ben Fritz, Wall Street Journal's entertainment columnist, that tells the story of how our film industry (and us - the audience) has dramatically changed over the last 15 years, through the momentous cultural effects of the VHS recorder, then TIVO, streaming video on demand, and now the "internet of things" we now watch movies on - computers, laptops, tablets, cellphones, etc. The book is about the evolution of the six major Hollywood studios, and takes a deep dive among their CEOs, Creative Executives, Producers, Writers and Showrunners . . . showing how they dealt with the massive changes going on in just the last decade. Disney saw the future and reacted the quickest, while Sony and Paramount execs were either stuck in the past or couldn't read the writing on the wall. Loads of research went into the book and it's packed with many interesting (as well as crazy) characters and tons of fascinating, sometimes hilarious, quotes. And it also covers those behemoths Amazon and Netflix, who scare the hell out of the studios.If you love movies or Hollywood history - get this book. If you're scratching your head about why all the big films are now based on comic books & toys, you'll find a wealth of intriguing information on how and why this is happening. This was a terrific book. If you really want to understand why the star-driven vehicles of the 80's - 2000's are no longer being made, this book explains it all. If you want to know why (what's left of) the biggest stars are turning to TV, it's all here. If you want to appreciate why the ability to binge TV content transformed series television into the equivalent of a very long movie - and what that means for the Hollywood ecosystem - look no further. Big event blockbusters will be all that remain at movie theaters thanks to viewers with tons of quality choices at home - and thanks to the burgeoning theatrical market in foreign countries, especially China. If you want to know why every media company wishes it were as wise as Disney, the answer's here.

Insightful and thoroughly researched, it's one of the few books I've encountered that both seems to understand where the industry has been and where it's going. It's a deep-dive that I was worried would be a little too "inside baseball," but it's written in a very accessible way. Great for people who want to understand the recent history of Hollywood and why things have been changing so much. Should be required reading for film students and anyone else trying to break into the business.

I thoroughly enjoyed "The Big Picture." While I could easily have enjoyed a few hundred additional pages, I found the up-to-date analysis to be prescient and insightful - the author covers a lot of interesting ground in the all-too-short 300 pages. Very comparable to "Pictures At A Revolution" and "Easy Riders, Raging Bulls" as it appears that we are at another turning point for Hollywood. I'm a big fan of the moderate budget films that are in jeopardy, so I hope the film industry finds a way to keep them relevant. Ben Fritz suggests how that scenario might come about.

As someone who clings to The Hollywood Dream, pursuing a career in the greatest industry of all time, it is easy to become jaded by today's Hollywood. American Cinema has been stuck in a sort of creative rut ever since the establishment of the Blockbuster. There are the exceptions to the rules, the Indie Auteur's of the New New Hollywood, but for the most part the box office numbers are in favor of those big investment franchise-films.I knew in my heart that something was changing about Hollywood, about American Cinematic entertainment. Movies have mastered spectacle and television has mastered original storytelling. Ben Fritz astoundingly informative and entertaining-to-read book "The Big Picture: The Fight for the Future of Movies" helped articulate the shifts Hollywood has ben experiencing in its most recent era of innovation and quality. But, while its easy to get cynical about the direction things have been moving, this book offers a hopeful outlook on what the future may hold. Highly recommend to those who are looking for a reason to believe in Hollywood once again...

I've been in the film industry for 15 years and seen drastic changes year after year through evolution and consumer consumption due to technology enhancements. Ben Fritz wrote in my opinion the strongest and most intelligent narrative about our business and step by step covers caveman to robot behavior. A lot of what he put on paper seems logical, but the deep dive into the context surrounding the major shift in how the business operates today is very insightful and is a good read regardless of whether you are an industry professional or simply trying to understand why Marvel, Amazon and Netflix dominate your viewing lust.

I truly enjoyed this book, for it has a plethora of information on the textile industry mainly focusing on Indigo! The author details her interesting journey on looking for authentic indigo fabric and the new people she meets as she seeks this majestic dye and talks to textile traders. It also gives you a glimpse into the West Africa Markets and culture. Such an interesting read!

Unfortunately, Catherine McKinley’s “Indigo” is another one of those books that could go grossly overlooked because it’s informative. Truly her search for indigo revealed the severe tie between cloth and world history everywhere.A reader will get much more than the story of indigo in the world of textiles. In this narrative ethnography, full of desire and color, the reader will be introduced to the Nigerian medical doctor who discovers a cure for AIDS but then just a few pages later the reader gets folded back into cloth while learning that the Netherlands was the fourth-largest, slave-trading nation whose Dutch textiles made up 57 percent of the goods exchanged for human lives during their slave trade. Cloth constituted more than 50 percent of European exports to West Africa on a whole by the late 1600s—so that we see the incredible importance of cloth to West Africans that they would exchange lives for it. Concurrently, abolitionists over in America were staging boycotts of indigo and all of this information goes very well towards feeding the reader with the zeitgeist of the times.Cloth takes on its own persona in "Indigo." McKinley makes cloth come alive as she explores its processes and its history in pre-colonial Africa as well. She effectively runs through the various types of cloth that were exchanged from East to West and North to South. Everyone around the world loved cloth in all its colors and textures. She also succinctly points out on a general note that the making of the ‘beauty’ during colonialism is also the making of the crisis that consumed many West African countries post-colonialism.Every bit of indigo McKinley can find not only furthers her Fulbright research but furthers her insatiable desire to 'feel' the history of the people when it is not readily communicable from its owners. She believes in understanding by osmosis so that when she lacks the information to steer her in the right direction for more culture, rather than assuming there is no more knowledge to be gotten, her self-determination, sheer faith, and belief in the power of cloth pushes her straight through to the places she needs to go and the people she needs to meet over and over again throughout her West African journey.The textile cultures McKinley discovers have been in West Africa for a very long time and as the needs of a global economy loom, she explains how that has necessitated that many West Africans start to place the pursuit of financial gain over the maintenance of laborious yet ancient and rare textile traditions. These cloth traditions do more than impart beauty but also translate generational heritage as indigo has been included in dowries passed down from mother to daughter and the symbolism embedded in the cloth itself expresses the various cultural values from ethnicity to ethnicity and country to country that she explores.

This book explores indigo-dyed cloth as an object with historical, cultural and aesthetic meanings ranging from its valences in ancient Dahomey to its importance as an object of the transatlantic slave trade to the personal meanings ascribed to it by the author, whose aesthetic passion motivates both her research and her thrilling travel memoir. I have not yet visited Africa, but the book recreated it for me: the colorful swirl and buzz of its marketplaces, the difficulty and joy of travel and daily life there, the amazing warmth and vibrancy of its ancient cultures: Yoruba, Ewe, Dahomeyan, to name only a few of those depicted in the book. What I found particularly transporting were the characters, especially the wise and witty Eurama, and the masterful way in which McKinley weaves elements of her personal story with facts about indigo. The way the book shows the richness and complexity of Africa is mindful of the work of the Nigerian writer Ben Okri, but the vivid clarity of the writing recalls the work of the celebrated Zora Neale Hurston. A hybrid of memoir, travelogue, and historical and cultural research, this unique book explores and challenges boundaries; it is a MUST READ for anybody curious about the complexity and uncanniness of global history and aesthetics!

A friend recommended this book to me. The mixed reviews on Amazon prepared me for a very individual and ideosyncratic approach. It's not so much about indigo but more about the social interaction through the ages with this dye source. I enjoyed the book very much. I would recommend it to people who like books in which the author is closely engaged with the subject. Our knowledge of her journey about the uses of indigo increases as we progress through the book!

Willingly, I meandered intoxicated through stories of the carefully concealed link between slavery and indigo; the rise and fall of indigo in the U.S. South; India's textile traditions; the path taken by the cloth from an artisanal ancient practice of dyeing handed down through generations to an industrialized synthetic-based production by the behemoth Vlisco, adulterated even further by China's growing grip on the African textile industry; African burial practices; African proverbs and world views; culture clash when Africa meets the West; women as financial powerhouses (read, Mama Benzs)and a the West Africa of old juxtaposed with statehoods teething pains of the early 21st century. Not lost in this rivetingly woven canvas is the author's own journey from New Englander and big city New Yorker to Africa where she functions as part obruni, shop girl, researcher, pilgrim and intrepid traveler in search of her indigo pot of gold.A collector's item, the author brings a piercing vision and skilled wordsmithing to a story whose multiple overlays could have been numbing to the casual reader attracted by the book's cover. I kept going intrigued by one of Africa's great textile traditions, as well as the sub-plot of McKinely's own search for self, using the cloth as metaphor.

This to me was a competent review of the life of an interesting character in Germany of that time. It did read a little dry at times with data dumps that had little shape or texture--just facts. However, much of it was interesting reading and certainly had nuggets of interesting anecdotes. I appreciate Amazon's ability to give us (the reader) an opportunity to decide for ourselves how we like a book like this, making it available for a good price in a convenient form (and without tiny print!!!). Many non-fiction books like this are a bit patchy, and you just have to be patient for the parts you like the best. This to me is one of them. Basically, it can be recommended for those who enjoy history from this fascinating period.

This was a well put together biography of one of Hitler's more interesting men. Not the most brilliant, according to those in the war who kept diaries, but a man who seemed at home on the battlefield. He seemed more at home in the German Army during the Second War than most of Hitler's other generals. His efforts probably enabled Germany to last as long as it did on the Eastern Front. This book is well worth reading if you are a history buff and enjoy histories of the Second World War.

Reading about this german general gives me new insight to the generals life. From the very beginning to the end of the war this general is in the middle of it. From commanding a platoon to an army this general shows what it was like to fight on the many fronts. This german general has often gotten bad press for not being a good general, but after reading this it changed my mind.

He author is to be commended for outstanding research on the subject, I was unable to put the book down each time I was able to make time to read, The author seemed to me to be thourghly objective and let the reader decide how the man should be judged. I have read many books where this man was described only as a monster and left as that. That a people could follow blind obedience with no empathy what so ever, seems impossible to me but it was prevalent with so many in Germany at this period of time.

Was not as in-depth as I had expected. I found my mind wandering at times, while reading the book.

This is a good overall about the life of Sepp Dietrich and his time in the German army and commander of the SS Lieberstandarte-Adolf Hitler security group. There doesn't seem to be as much information on Dietrich as in the cases of Hitler, Goering, Goebbels or Himmler, but the author does a great job of putting everything together to make it a very good read.

Holds your attention. Great story line dealing with US and German armament capabilities.Folds in the personalities and strategy of a few officers and soldiers.Although a novel it no doubt addresses many key factors the men and women realized at that time in France.

I hate pictures in books taken with cheap cameras. Some of the photos reveal stuff you would never have thought of? Why a picture of a pushup or a neckroll. I am a USPTA tennis pro (from Bollettieri's in Florida) and some of the exercises in this book are not tennis specific. Here's the big problem: Exercises with weights can often cause erratic stroking. Too many bicep curls, for example, often cause an upward swing forward. Remember: You only have 17 degrees left/right before you hit wide shots. Dumbell fly's can cause you to hit too far forward, which for right handers will pull the ball wide on the left when it crosses the net. I was annoyed at: NO index. Maybe weight training might help an upper level player with endurance, but it's nowhere near as beneficial as cardio exercise. Pass on weights; get on the court!

I have been working out for over fifty years and found this book to be a big disappointment. There are a few pages stating how your tennis will benefit from weight training. Other than that, there is almost nothing that is tennis specific.I found this book to be a complete waste of money for anyone who already has knowledge of weight training in general. I did not see any new exercises that were not already described in various other weight training manuals.If you are a novice to weight training, this book may be of some value to you. However, there are better weight training books out there.

Perfect service and very interesting book

I have a few of the books from this series, and they're very good. Pictures for everything and well written out plans. Obviously everyone needs their own plan, so don't expect the plans to be perfect for everyone.

This book has no index, making it impossible to find any specific exercises without combing through the entire book.

5 Stars – One Click this One – Fantastic ReadWonderful!!!!! I can’t say enough great things about the first book in the new Connor series. I love how well the characters were developed. It is impossible not to fully love Landon, Maddie and the entire Connor clan. Connor experienced his first major loss in his life when he was just 19 years old. He then experiences another at 30. The emotional toll of both of these incidents, has caused him to be afraid of love so he throws himself into his company in an attempt to hide from love coming back into his life. Maddie grew up with a lack of emotional support and love. It isn’t that her parents don’t love her but they leave her alone with her sister Grace frequently. Then she moves from one side of the country to the other with her fiancé but he is also not a supportive person and makes her feel little and unimportant.Circumstances have Maddie and Landon meeting for the first time. Neither of them are looking for love so they continue to fight their mutual attraction to each other. Time, while not on their side, also works against them when trying to stay away from each other.So will Landon throw off his fear of sharing his heart and loving someone? Will Maddie finally believe that she is special and deserves someone who will love and support her dreams. I have fallen in love with Layla Hagen's Bennett Family series, and the first installment of the Connor family series appears like it will also be one of my favorites. Landon Connor had his heart shattered four years ago and feels like he can never love again. Maddie Jennings ended her last relationship on a bitter note and has no desire to get involved with the opposite sex any time soon. But when Landon and Maddie meet, the tension is palpable and the chemistry is sizzling! Filled with nosy sibling antics and laugh out loud scenarios, this is another of my favorite reads to add to my list!

OMG!!! Hagens series about the Bennett family was awesome, I loved it and I can day that she has nailed it one more time with the Conners. Cant waittttt for the rest if the series to come out, I love the romance, the passion, the humor and I love how they dont spend half the book apart or broken up but building the love. I just love the way it all comes together. I have a feeling Grace might be falling for one of the clans, maybe Jace,hummm we will see. But Hagen you rock and you did it again. But don't take to long readers get ansty, I do.

I am in love with this series already. I was sad when Layla wrote the last book for the Bennett family, but the glimpse we got of the Connor clan, made me super excited for this spin off series. This book was sexy, sweet, and fun. I can't wait to read the next book, and I hope we see little glimpses of the Bennett family throughout the series.

I don't care for books with a narrative written in the first person. It's a personal preference, but I think that potential readers should be warned in advance. The first person narrative should be reserved for autobiographies and similar types of books. The narrative in this book shifts back and forth between first and third person with such frequency it's uncomfortable and a bit confusing - particularly because the reader doesn't even know who the "I" is at the start .Not my cup of tea.

I usually like reading this authors books but this one was extremely boring to me and for some reason I did not like the characters at all. Authors books are getting very repetitive. There are still more siblings I'm sure she is going to write about and I think at this point I need to pass. Sorry.

Wolf of Wall Street1987 This is the story of Jordan Belfort and he's new on the job at Wall Street where commodities are bought and sold continuously during the day.Follows his life as he learns from others how to get ahead. Many marriages, hookers, drugs, liquor help him succeed.Liberties that come with power he feels are his and thus that gets him in trouble on many fields.Loved the action and descriptive details on furnishings and surroundings. Travel and adventures are great to read about and the downfall and every elementthat happened to them both and the outcome.I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

Surprisingly well written. I think it is important for you, discerning future reader, to realize that basically all the dialogue in this book is invented. Jordan tells his life story in the form of a novel and takes a lot of liberties in order to get his point across. That being said, it is easily forgiven and should absolutely be filed under non-fiction; it is a wonderfully blunt contribution to the saga of the "American dream."The author does a great job of establishing his frame of mind and his mood in the given situation with his use of language and structure. He does not write things like "that made me angry." His sentences get shorter, his words get harsher, and his venom becomes tangible.Well executed, fun romp through depravity at warp speed. Folks who are upset by the curse words and descriptions of sex, drugs, and excessive spending need to get over themselves. Jordan Belfort will not be censored by your old fashioned notions of etiquette and weak sensibilities.Enjoy, folks. This is Goodfellas on paper, with corporate murders instead of real ones.

I happened to see Wolf of Wall Street in the theater before I read the book, and bought the Kindle copy when it was $1.99 during an Oscar week Gold Box sale. Having enjoyed the film immensely, I was curious as to how the book held up in comparison.Having seen the film before reading the book is a blessing and a curse. Certain expectations may not be met, but preconceived notions can also allow the reader to pay closer attention to detail. In this case, I felt the spirit of Jordan Belfort in both his writing and Terence Winter's screenplay; both portray him appropriately as a sick, depraved individual whose high-roller lifestyle, and criminal activities in running a brokerage firm spiraled out of control in drug-induced decadence. Names have been changed, for example, Belfort's wife, Nadine Caridi, becomes Naomi Lapaglia, but the personalities and appearances remain nearly the same. A lot of the time, I thought to myself, "Oh, I know who that is!"I felt the film told a more cohesive story, in spite of its three-hour length, whereas the book meandered in and out of moments. Many of the events were condensed into the film, such as Belfort's drive home on quaaludes and subsequent events are a composite of different incidents that occur over multiple chapters. What I did not expect, and actually surprised me as the most compelling aspect of the book was Belfort's battle with drug addiction and subsequent antics while in rehab. By his inevitable arrest, I actually pitied him. A weakness of the film is that it glosses over Belfort's upswing during and after rehab.Unlike with the film, the more salacious, criminal, and business aspects of this story were still rather shocking in the book, but after a while, they became tedious. At least with the film, Scorsese took some artistic license to include more humor and take the Strattonites activities to levels of parody, which I enjoyed immensely.So where does my review end up with the book? Well, I thought Belfort's (and his editors, I guess) writing style was enthusiastic enough to hold my interest, I appreciated the more vivid characterizations and insight into his lifestyle, as well as the focus on his battle with drug addiction, but it didn't completely captivate me until the end when he regained at least some redemption by achieving sobriety. Even by the end, the book's denouement is a depressing ordeal.I appreciate it for what the book is - a decent, modern cautionary tale that money can't buy happiness and how drug addiction can ruin lives. However, I feel like I appreciate the film more for it's entertainment value, top notch production, and more effective treatment of the story.

I gave this 5 stars, not because it is a good read or a truthful memoir, but because it is a fine example of criminal psychology and drug addiction.The supposed facts related by Belfort must be taken with a large dose of salt. He readily admits with some pride deceiving everyone he deals with including his wife and supposed friends and business partners. We would be quite gullible to then take his writing at face value. He portrays himself as generous to a fault, but of course the money he passes out is mostly stolen. The judgement against him included a requirement to pay over 100 million in retribution to those he defrauded. Most of that has never been paid even though his income from books and movie rights is quite substantial. By the way his sentence was lighter than those of all his cohorts because he turned against them when the law caught up with him. This after spilling a lot of ink in his book about loyalty, trust and "omerta." Does he still have hidden assets that rightfully belong to the victims? You guess. I bet he does.He tries to present himself as a reformed bad actor who has seen the light and conquered his addiction. I hope he has conquered his addictions, but that wasn't his only problem. He is quite intelligent and seen as such by all around him. The schemes he ran were carefully designed and couldn't have been conceived and executed while stoned, so there is more to this than addiction. The most important part of the story is left out. How did a broke guy starting at the very bottom of a major brokerage firm get to be a criminal millionaire? That's the guts of the real story, and it was left out. We only see him at the climax just before the downfall.Sex and drugs sell books and movies and that's the new scheme, and it is lawful even if only partly true and even if the main facts are left out.The schemer and deceiver is still at work.
