This isn't an instructional type of book, really. It primarily shows finished projects. You can find more useful information on YouTube.

I had hoped to learn how to make handmade books when I purchased this, but the author seems to have focused on adding a large number of TYPES of books to the repertoire while not really spending enough effort to describe any of them in detail. It's great (I guess) that there are 100 types of bindings, but the descriptions and diagrams for even the most simple ones are quite difficult to follow. She wastes a lot of type talking about her friends and who invented what, but when I try to follow the instructions I find them sketchy and poorly diagrammed. A ten-step process may have only one or two diagrams. Ten would be better.Often the author assumes knowledge that I don't have. For instance, she has a whole page devoted to making endbands, but she never explains what an endband IS. She also does not show a diagram of one in use. I suppose I could go to the web and get a lesson on that, but then why do I need the book?This might be a great text for a class taught by the author. As a stand-alone teaching aid it lacks substance.I found the book "Cover to Cover" by Shareen LaPlatz to be more useful. It is a smaller book with many fewer binding types, but each one is explained in clear detail with adequate drawings for each project.

Just a note to say this book is about making cute or artistic craft books. I thought it would be more about traditional book-making and even repair. Some of the concepts of traditional binding are present but overall these are artsy craft books as you can see on the cover. For an excellent book on traditional bookbinding I highly recommend: HAND BOOKBINDING a manual of instruction by Aldren A Watson. (1963) It is only 93 pages but has everything one needs to know for bookbinding and repair along with superb diagrams in a 10.5x8 inch format.

This is a really nice book on all sorts of different ways to make structures for handmade artist books. However, I agree that it is not really a beginners' book -- in college I spent about two years on a student library job repairing books and making acid-free boxes for books in too bad shape to repair. Even with this experience, I realize I may still have to get an easier book to brush up my skills (I was in college a while ago). It's a great book to get ideas from and, possibly, learn how to do them (the second part probably depends on your background and natural talent for this type of work).

Disappointing. The cover shows bound books, but the book itself it probably 90% fancy paper folding for accordians and other types of non-book books (cards, scrolls, etc). I am sure it is fine for what it is, it just isn't helpful if you want to learn more traditional bookbinding.My negative review is more for the description on Amazon than the book itself, I guess. Not what I was expecting and not what I wanted.

I have seen a lot of reviews saying that there are missing steps which makes this book confusing to work through. At first glance, it does seem that way. For each binding process, Golden includes written step by step directions. However, illustrations are only provided as needed– some steps are simple enough that they don't require an illustration. Each illustration is numbered with the corresponding written direction. After I realized this, I had no problem following along with her directions. This book is a great resource for modern book arts processes/techniques and a handy resource for vocabulary, tools, materials and inspiration. I also think this book is priced incredibly reasonably for the number of pages and color photos it contains.

I can only echo what the others have said - for me its an excellent book to see if I want to make my own journals. I don't have her two previous books so cannot comment on whether its a repeat or not, but for a newbie its an encyclopedia of knowledge and techniques as you try out different styles and formats. Not every project appeals; they don't have to. Even if you don't like the end results, you learn much in the doing, and its the acquisition of skills that is important here while having fun. The author not only covers book binding, but pop-ups and other forms of card-making, so its not just about making books though she does cover the basics. If you are buying this because you are doing an academic course, you may be better off looking elsewhere as this does put emphasis on the crafty side of things rather than the serious art of bookbinding.One complaint; the instructions are not always very clear so its advisable to do a trial run with printer paper first to make sure that you have understood the diagrams or what she has written, and/or what she has forgotten to put in. Apart from that its a good book to start making books with, and if you find you like bookbinding, you will be ready for the many excellent heavy-weight books that other reviewers have mentioned, without feeling intimidated.

While there were a few good nuggets found in the middle of the book, the rest is far too dated to be helpful. I skimmed most of the book and found that the call-outs were insightful, but didn't bother reading in-depth. I would skip this one.

If you're looking for a lesson on the difference between commodities, goods, services and experiences, then this book will provide it. The important lesson, though, is how to move from a service-based business model to one based on experiences, as first exemplarized by Disney's theme parks​.​Other than that, we find that The Experience Economy functions mostly as content marketing for the authors' consultancy business. Which is perfectly fine, but we think that the main lessons of the book are outdated.We found one important and interesting aspect of PIne and Gilmore's book that we want to point out. It's reflected in the book's subtitle: "Work Is Theatre & Every Business Is A Stage".In order to transform your service into an experience you must consider yourself a director of a play, your employees as actors and supporting staff, and your customers as the audience.​You must also appreciate the different styles of acting -- and more importantly, reconsider​ the traditional script-based customer service. Draw lessons from improv theatre and street actors, to give your customers truly unique experiences.

I had the pleasure of discussing Experience Economy with Gilmore in a small class setting. What was apparent is that he loves this stuff. I think other reviews on this book already do a good job of encapsulating what this book is about and how useful its perspectives are. An additional insight would be that the contents derive from Gilmore's passion and willingness to see the world differently. The real lesson for the reader should be the same. Have passion about what you do, and be willing to take a risk of seeing your field through a different lens of eyes.The core concept of the book is also fairly simple. If you take a commodity and customize it, it's a good. Customize the good, and you get a service. Customize the service, and you have experience ... hence the Experience economy. A key takeaway is that at each level up, there's greater value for the user. Also, it's newer, so it's a richer field in which to compete (in the experience economy, versus, say commodity economy).Much of the details surrounding the experience economy itself is rendered in descriptions of theater and stage.What comes after the experience economy? It's transformation. For example, Gilmore spoke about golf coaches. What if you didn't charge by the hour (service), but instead charged by how many handicaps you are responsible for improving for your client (transformation). Clearly, this is risky. Your client many not improve. But, the opportunity is that this kind of alignment would change the way you teach and engage your client, and really could help that client become a superior player. The value add would be far more than simply walking around with someone for an hour or two. And, if you know what you are doing, you should be able to extract appropriate economy rent for that transformation. The road to transformation is replete with our mastery over data. Data to information. Information to knowledge. Knowledge to wisdom. The book is a must read for innovators as well as those looking to go into a new business.

This works well as a framework for case studies on Las Vegas, Disney, and Selfridges, and for creating templates for events that are themselves an Experience regardless of their actual location.

Joe has written a book that I have come to realize years later is quite timeless in it's approach to understanding experiential marketing.

A Harvard educated friend of mine told me about this book which created some interest, until I found out the most successful companies in the country were using this technique to rapidly expand their profitability. Then I couldn't wait to order it and find out for myself how these concepts applied to small business.I wasn't disappointed and have recommended the book for years because even though it's a radical concept, it works. If you have ever wondered if price is the most important element in finding business success, this book will convince you otherwise. It's not about money- it's about the customers experience and when you know how to master this technique you will win customers for life along with word of mouth marketing that will be invaluable for your long term business success.

Unfortunately, the listing here leaves out the subtitle: "Work Is Theatre & Every Business a Stage." That's what got to me. Acknowledging the role of serious play in serious commerce is long overdue, but The Experience Economy makes up for lost time. While most business books are little more than literary Sominex, this one will stretch your head in new dimensions. Even if you disagree with bits, it'll wake you, shake you, make you think.At first, I was put off by the notion of the Internet as "the greatest force for commoditization known to man." This is only true when the net is seen as an extension of the broadcast model: think TV. But that's the wrong approach, as the authors later make clear: "Cyberspace is a great place for such experiences, but many businesses still don't get it. They're heading into the commoditization trap, trying to figure out how to better sell their company's goods and services over the World Wide Web, when in fact most individuals surf the Net for the experience itself."E-commerce as performance art, I love it! So step right up, boys and girls, and get your ticket to the Pine & Gilmore Masque. The show's just about to begin!

Have you been memorizing hundreds of words on Duolingo? I'm so happy that I've read this book, because it's finally made learning German fun. All I want to do now is read books like these. I'm definitely going to read the other books by this author and then gradually move on to more difficult books. Reading this book has been a major breakthrough for me in terms of grammar, vocabulary, and understanding German culture.The story itself is fun and engaging and easy to follow. The various situations throughout the book give opportunities to learn an assortment of vocabulary.

I read this book to improve my German reading. It succeeded at that, by introducing new vocabulary in a context which made it easy to guess the meaning. But beyond that, the story was entertaining, with clever and surprising twists and turns. The author makes it fun to improve one's reading of German. As advertised on the cover, it is designed for reading level A1/A2.

This book held my interest all the way through. Just when I thought I had it figured out it took another turn and went on to a surprise ending. The German was easy for me to follow as well, and the highlighted words helped with things that were new too me. At the end, I had a feeling of accomplishment for having read a German text and understanding it. More by this author, please!Lieber Frau Bohn, bitte schreiben Sie mehr Bücher. Danke.

Surprisingly interesting and fun book. Level of writing is perfect for A2.Only critique is, instead of putting the "new vocabulary" words with their translations at the end of the chapter, why not put them as a footnote on the page that they appear on? It's a real pain flipping back and forth all the time. Much easier to look at the bottom of the page.

I recently finished "teaching" this book to my high school German class. When I had first read it, I knew it would hold my students' attention as well as be exactly at the correct level for my students. We enjoyed the flow and it lent itself well to fun and creative reinforcement activities after each chapter. The students reacted to the different characters - some they loved and some they hated! They felt a sense of accomplishment at the end of the book. Just a great read whether you are trying to improve your own German or interested in reading it with students! Looking forward to using the author's other works soon!

Great book for the beginner learner of German who wants to add many avenues of gaining fluency. Don't worry, the Kindle version highlights certain words and provides a list of vocabulary words.Although German has very different grammar from English, even the novice will be able to figure out the gist of the story and then review a translation from German to English to confirm. The kindle version is on sale for only $3.45. Very affordable.

I loved this book. The story is entertaining and while the reading requires your attention it is not frustratingly difficult. One of the best things about Angelika Bohn's books are all the idioms and "real people speech" you'll learn. I would definitely recommend the paperback over the Kindle version. My Paperwhite had trouble keeping track of the hot links.

As an intermedia student, I found this book challenging, but carefully designed to take you step by step through the complexity of the language. The best part is that you do not even notice as the story is so entertaining. Also reading it in the kindle paperback with dictionary German-English speeds up the process giving a natural flow to the experience

She has an ability to build things and buys the family farm to re-furbish it, as a place where her grandmother came to get away.She meets the neighbor and begins a relationship that ends with her falling in love with him.As she is working on the farm house, she finds some old letters of her grandmothers that lead to vandalism, break-ins destruction of property and an attempted murder.The story leads the reader through a series of events that end with the suspect being identified and there is an excellent twist.Another great writing by this author and a demonstration of attention to detail she is known for.

I say that because I am sure 5 or even 7 stars are normal for you as I have been a fan for years, not to make you feel old. The book cost more than many on Amazon but oh so worth it. I did not see the ending coming and for someone who reads about $100 worth of cheaper prices books a month and a book a day that says a lot. I am also a retired psychologist and I did not see the guilty coming. I have been a fan a long time and will continue to read your wonderful work.

I thought I had read this book when it came out, but I was mistaken. This is one of those books you simply cannot put down. The main characters are stand-outs. There are so many interesting people involved in the mystery of the story, it takes time to figure out who is who. But that is what makes it more interesting. I enjoy Robert's story-telling.

Former child star, Cl!!a, moved into her late grandmother's Little Farm, to rehab it and bring life back into it. Her grandmother, a former star had lived there, through great parties, and had killed herself at the farm. Villa is determined to make it a home and love there herself. But someone hates her family and targets Villa and her house. Ford, a graphic novelist, lives across the street and hits it off with Cilla. Together they dig into the mystery, held together, and fall in love. Nora Roberts does it again! I don't know how I missed this one, but I am going back and reading any of her books I could have missed or fogotten. Great mystery, great love, great read!

I usually give Nora Roberts a five star rating. However there were two issues I had with this book. The first and most annoying was that it took too long to get to the mystery. I almost stopped reading it because it took so long to capture my interest. Secondly, I thought the ending came out of nowhere. Those characters weren't developed enough to consider them seriously. In my humble opinion, not one of her best. However, I did give her four stars because no one but Roberts could think of this interesting plotline.

Tribute is about an ex-star named Cilla who buys her grandmothers house and fixes it. Along the way she meets Ford and in the process she is finally able to find out what really happened to her grandmother and her true inner strength. Cilla is a really likable woman, she is strong with a great sense of humor, yet she has an inner vulnerability that only gets seen by those close to her. Ford is interesting, he is an artist and comic geek, yet he is not feminine nor is he shy. He has strong opinions and a wonderful sense of humor. He balances out Cilla's larger than life personality and when things get tough he is right there with her. While Cilla is fixing up the house she has someone sabotaging her project, someone trashes her bathrooms and calls to change her orders. There is a mystery behind Cilla's grandmothers' death, her and Ford try to find out who her grandmother was having an affair with before she died. This book is one of my favorite Nora Roberts, it starts out as a lazy day read and I kept telling myself oh I'll put it down after this chapter. This book really sucked me in and before I knew I had finished it.

Having just found this good author and not having read any of her extension collection I was elated to find her. . then I got this book. . it drags, it wanders, it is boring. Now that didn't stop me. . Nora Roberts is a great story teller and I just got 5 of her books today. . ..this one. . I don't know why it just doesn't have Nora Roberts characters that you love to love or hate.

This book was very helpful in minor/basic procedures. Great for a student or a practitioner going into urgent care/ER. Step by step instructions with helpful pictures. I will definitely be keeping this book when I am done school.

There is adequate information on some of the procedures covered, but it seems to have a limited information and pictures on others.

Good resource for those needing to learn procedures.

I can say that this book is about a woman's voice, and ultimately, all women's voices. It is about the way that culture and society and family shape and define and silence that voice, and the ways we must purposefully craft it anew. Have you lost your voice? Have you forgotten what it is to sing with joy at sunrise? This book will remind you. Not with bullet-lists full of self-help jargon, but with the oldest teacher we have; story. This book is small, and soft, and gentle. It will fit in your handbag, or your back pocket, and you will want to keep it there. You will want to underline and highlight, and write in the margins. When you are feeling at a loss for words, you will open the book and you will find bits of story that you underlined, and will remember, When Women Were Birds.

Frankly, I don't know how to describe my feelings about this book. I knew how I felt at the beginning. I fell in love with the poetic and philosophical first steps, the empty pages reflecting the silence of the journals of the author's mother. How daring, how true, I thought. How whimsical. What an adventure this is going to be. And in a way, Williams does take me into some epopee. From one chapter to the next, I don't know where I am going to go or where I am going to land. While the language is always clean and simple--and when at its best, pure-- the author's mind travels from the abstract and complex to the tactile and familiar, and back. There are descriptions of nature, of difficult and/or colorful personalities as well as references to thinkers like Barthes and Cixous. It is a bit like a buffet of tastes and ideas. It reminds me somewhat of Rousseau and his mind wanderings, for When Women Were Birds is also impregnated with ecology. Unlike Rousseau, however, Williams puts her money where her mouth is. Although it is presented with numbered chapters, its eclectic content reads like a journal. And I wish it had been called so. When Women Were Birds, A Journal by Terry Tempest Williams. Or: When Women Were Birds, A Mind Voyage by Terry Tempest Williams. When Women Were Birds, Fifty-Four Variations on Voice leads to confusion. I'll tell you why in a moment. Here and there, Williams attempts to unify the book with two basic themes: giving women a voice; extracting the meaning of her mother's empty journals. In her attempts to give women a voice, she fails because that's not what the book is about. Furthermore, these returns, as in the recapitulations from the movements of a sonata (and she refers to music as well), are occasionally discordant. Her variations are not so much variations as they are separations. This is a book not so much about giving a voice to others as it is about re-defining one's own. Her own. In her attempt to fill out her mother's blank pages, to give these pages a reason to be, she has spent time in the desert, somewhat lost. This is a book about seeking, not finding. We all face empty pages, existential pain. And Birds is ultimately a treaty about existential pain--albeit accompanied with a very real, brain related angst, as the author explains. Even the title reflects a wound, a damaged --or broken?--wing. Although the prose is in itself highly pleasurable as well as profound for the most part, I wouldn't recommend this to the confused person trying to find her way and her voice, for this might confuse her further. Like the bird who skips here and there, flies from one tree to the next, sings now and stays quiet a minute later, the writing is graceful, beautiful scattering. But it is still scattering.

This book is unlike any other I have read, and it's all the better for it. Williams uses a unique lyrical essaying style to convey her thoughts--primarily on nature, environmentalism, women, culture, and faith--with almost-poetic artistry and clarity. Her prose style is at once both lulling and beautiful, provocative and intensely interesting. I was repeatedly surprised at new directions she took in the (extremely loose) plot arc, and found myself experience poignant emotions throughout the memoir-esque volume. One section on her experience teaching biology in a Utah private school was particularly witty, and another section concerning her run-in with a deranged psychopath had me properly horrified. Other moments encouraged me to think more deeply, while at times I felt exceptionally depressed at the state of the world.Her feminist views come through clearly throughout the book, paying specific attention to women's voices and their roles in the goings-on of the world. As a young woman I take inspiration from her passages on female empowerment and individuality. The couple of sections featuring the female body felt especially important, and necessary given the problems so many women experience with self-confidence and body image. Rather than address these issues head-on, Williams describes the creative powers of women and the beauty of feminine capabilities, ultimately using feminist ideals not to compare women to men, but to define woman as a wholly-independent being full of potential.Anecdotes ranging from rural Africa to the wilderness of Utah take the reader across the world and Williams' fascinating experiences within it. Above all, Terry Tempest Williams writes as a role model, advocating for women and their voices while attempting to decode her own mother's apparent lack of voice, as evidenced through the chilling central question: why blank journals?
