As a minister who has long forgotten the Hebrew I had to take, I found this book extremely good as it deals with key words and phrases, but also with the problems presented in doing translations of both words and ideas.

I am a non-seminary trained bible student. I am a very monolingual college graduate. This book pried open a portion of my mind to get a hint of what I am missing in depending on others to translate the text for me. I think this is a very useful tool for those of use who carry the bible with us each Sunday morning.

I ordered this book for my mom over the summer and (since the folks farm) she wasn't able to get around to reading it until just recently and was very disappointed to find that pages 115-126 were missing from the book. Unfortunately we are out of the return window to exchange copies, but I wanted to post this review to notify potential future buyers to double check their copies as soon as they arrive. My mom said that she really enjoyed what she was able to read, and that the content itself was very good.

A great book! It is causing me to think and rethink many of my favorite verses. It has also made me more interested in Hebrew. It helps in the process of de-Anglosizing the Bible.

Purchased book for Bible Study class. Ordered copy in VG condition. Book rec'd has a dirty cover; cover torn in upper left hand corner. Spine has several worn areas. Back cover has significant scuff marks. Expected better overall condition or I would not have ordered. Would not recommend to others.

Although the book is not explicitly broken up this way, I'd argue the chapters make up two different sections. The first 9 chapters dive deep into the book of Jonah and make a lot of theological and statements. Every verse of the short book if covered at least a little. Chapters 10-12 switch gears by taking some of the major themes and applying them in deep and impactful ways to contemporary society (specifically Western Americanized Christian).What it does well: *Keller is a translator. He takes deep and often complicated subjects from the Bible or more scholarly authors and translates them for more popular audiences. He is a master of reaching the heart and head of his reader.*Any reader that has not truly immersed herself in the biblical book of Jonah will come away with a much deeper knowledge of the book. Keller covers the entire book in ways that will make many people go, "Oh."*The last three chapters are worth the price of the book, IMO (although I enjoyed the rest of the book as well.) Keller's scalpel on some of the idols of the current Western church (both liberal and conservative) is exacting and incisive. There were quite a few times when I would catch myself thinking, "Yeah, that's just like [insert person or church here]" only to realize in just a couple sentences that he has described me as well.*Keller knows the human heart. He is very helpful at describing how we rebel against God and the antidote.*Although there is much more done well, my favorite part of this book (as is my favorite part of Keller as an author) is how well it describes grace and what Jesus has done for us. This book, although about Jonah, is really about Jesus and his work to see us come to him.What it lacks: *This is not a commentary. It is not meant to be. This is not a criticism, but instead informative.*One thing I was a little disappointed about was the lack of mention of abortion in a section entitled "Christians and Politics" (163-170). As I mentioned above, Keller attacks many sacred cows of both liberals and conservatives (we are not only to be for the poor but also to contend that sex is only for marriage). His biggest attack is to say that Christians cannot abstain from politics, nor can they buy wholesale into any particular party's platform. He says we must contend for those who are most vulnerable and alludes to many disenfranchised groups. This would have been a particularly good time to mention abortion which attacks our most vulnerable. He seems to mention some other important things but shies away here. To be fair to him, it seems as though many of the points he makes will logically lead to the belief that we should contend against abortion when followed to the end. So, as much as I was a little disappointed, the implications of these points will be clear to those who listen.Some quick highlights: "Jonah concluded that because he could not see any good reasons for God's command, there could be any. Jonah doubted the goodness, wisdom, and justice of God."-15"God shows him here that he is the God of all people and Jonah needs to see himself as being part of the whole human community, not only a member of a faith community."-37"To deny God's wrath upon sin not only robs us of a full view of God's holiness and justice but also can diminish our wonder, love, and praise at what it was that Jesus bore for us."-65"To work against social injustice and to call people to repentance before God interlock theologically."-94"Then God says, in essence, "You weep over plants, but my compassion is for people."-118"Sin always begins with the character assassination of God."-138"We sneer at people more liberal than us as social justice warriors; we disdain those more conservative than us as hateful bigots."-171"Religious people often invite nonbelievers to convert by calling them to adopt new sets of behaviors and new ritual practices, and the while redoubling their efforts to live a virtuous life. That, however, is to load more burdens on people.... While the gospel must lead to a changed life, is is not those changes that save you."-207Recommendation: This is a good book. It is easy and accessible. I recommend it for anyone who wants to go deeper into the book of Jonah or anyone who may be teaching this little book. I would also highly recommend it to anyone who is seeking to understand some of the nuances of Christianity. I found my heart moved multiple times.

I didn't know much about the prophet Jonah except that he was swallowed up by a whale. I didn't even know there was a book called "Jonah" in the Bible! Reading Prodigal Prophet helped me to really understand Jonah's story as Tim Keller delves deep and refers back to the original Hebrew text to help the readers understand the often overlooked messages in the book of Jonah. There is so much depth and meaning to this book that it left me almost speechless. It is convicting, encouraging, and compelling all at the same time. It is helpful to read this book with a Bible nearby for cross references and for looking up the maps, etc. Prodigal Prophet reveals God in a clear light as to who he is and it also reveals who Christians need to be in this world. Tim Keller is not shy about calling out Christians who are Christians only by name, but not by deeds and the way they live out their lives. This book is definitely worth a read and ponder.

A very complete and well written introduction to the craft of orchestration. Some sections are greatly expanded from the third edition, and some are barely touched at all.The publisher takes the book into the digital era by replacing the accompanying CD with a website where you can listen to the examples. HOWEVER, hidden in the small print of the user agreement it says that you only get access to the media files for one year (!!). If you want to have access to the files after that time, you have to pay another 40 dollars per year that you want to access them. They never advertise this at the time of sale, which I think is very misleading.It is clear that the publisher does not offer this upgrade for the user's convenience, but rather to squeeze money out of the pockets of their primarily student audience. Until they address this issue, you're probably better off buying the third edition, which comes with a regular CD that never expires.EDIT (4 Oct 2017): A year after this review I can confirm that my access has expired. I now have the option to add another 180 days (NOT an entire year as reported earlier) for $40. The website also says that my access expired 3 months after buying the book, as opposed to the one year I read in the user agreement. Please draw your own conclusions.

One reason I was willing to pay for this extremely expensive book was that the ad promised that "The Fourth Edition invites students to experience the instruments through online audio and video recordings and now offers more coverage of writing for band." note: NO INDICATION THAT YOU WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR ACCESS!When the book came, it had a card in it with the web site URL, a password, and instructions for setting up your access -- with NO INDICATION THAT YOU WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR ACCESS!I went through the process in question, with NO INDICATION THAT YOU WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR ACCESS!Then after a year, I found my access blocked, and a message that if I wanted to keep access you better give us some money, bub.They can of course charge for their web site access if they want to. But to advertise that the extremely high price of this book includes web access with NO INDICATION THAT YOU WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR ACCESS! and then to include instructions for access in the book with NO INDICATION THAT YOU WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR ACCESS! and then to have you go through the registration process with NO INDICATION THAT YOU WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR ACCESS! and then to spring it on you later that to keep access you have to give them still more money than the unconscionably high price they have already charged -- in other words, TO SELL YOU A TRIAL SUBSCRIPTION WHILE ALLOWING YOU TO ASSUME IT IS A PERMANENT SUBSCRIPTION --is very clearly unethical. I'm just looking at the book for the first time, but as a string player myself, I can already tell that the book hasn't been proofread very carefully. (especially for a 4th edition!) I've already encountered a number of errors and inaccuracies (a lot of them having to do with fingerings on string instruments), and it makes me wonder if there will be more errors relating to other instruments that I'm less familiar with that will therefore be more difficult for me to catch...Overall though, it seems like a useful resource to have. And I agree with the other reviews that making you pay more to extend the access to the examples online is totally bogus. I guess it's geared towards people using the book for one semester and then just forgetting about it, but for those of us who'd like to keep referring to the examples in the book, it's really annoying.

Good textbook just no audio to go along with the tracks. Most textbooks nowadays have a code through which you can access listening libraries online with the purchase of a textbook. This one there isnt audio with it. Other than that, very compact and good. Perfect size. It's not one of those big, heavy textbooks that you need to carry around.

Excellent book, clear examples, great learning tool. Every course should use it.Downside: Have to buy music separately. Should required to include music disks with the actual god damn book.

Great working book, ideal for the amateur musician who's making film music, like me.

She has a Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from Fairfield University, Connecticut, and also holds an MBA from Harvard University and a BS from Parsons The New School for Design. She practices and resides in Southport, Connecticut.Maryann Karinch is the author of 24 books, including Forging Healthy Connections, which she co-authored with Trevor Crow. Most of books and presentations focus on human behavior. In this incredibly useful guide, Mullineaux and Karinch first lay out the challenges of creating a blended family but then more importantly provide practical advice for how to make it not just work but be a truly wonderful experience for everyone in the family. It is such a hopeful book - using examples (including those from Mullineaux's own life) of successful blends. The book is undrepinned with a strong intellectual foundation based on research by a number of psychologists as well as work with Mullineaux's clients. Early on, the reader takes a quiz to better understand their own attachment style. And then the authors explain through the lens of the different attachment styles what that will mean for successful partnering and parenting in a blended family. It tackles important issues like being a stepparent to a teenager, a particularly challenging role. But the authors use the teenage brain as the starting point so that as a parent you can better understand both the limits and freedom that they need. The second part of the book is devoted to the five factors that you must have to succeed - trust, vulnerability, empathy, truthfulness and structure and brings them to life with myriad stories from blended families. In the end, the book is not just practical; it is hopeful. The authors explain that you only need to get it right 30% of the time. And with this book as a guide, I suspect most people can achieve that.

A charmingly simple introduction to quantum physics using the example of Shrodinger's Cat, which asserts that "a quantum system such as an atom or photon can exist as a combination of multiple states corresponding to different possible outcomes...." and will remain in this "superposition" until observed or interfered with by the outside world (Wikipedia). In this clever 'Baby Loves' book, Ruth Spiro uses baby's kitty to demonstrate this theory: is she asleep in the box or awake? It isn't till baby opens the box (being the outside force) that she discovers which it is. Clever first building block to a complicated subject that can be expounded upon as the child grows. Outstanding.

Greater than expected when we got it. We have the other books too so we preordered this, my 9mos old baby loves the pics. Husband (who is a geek) loves it more 😀 It's a simplified/child friendly explanation of schrodinger's cat concept!

Being a physicist, I bought a good number of physics related books for my baby. (Maybe too many). My daughter loves this book. Yes, it is very very very basic but so are many of these baby science type books. The artwork is engaging and my daughter loves looking for the cat. I have both the Thermodynamics and this one by Ruth Spiro and my daughter loves them both. Personally, I like the Quantum one better than the Thermodynamics (because I feel the content in Quantum physics is more related than the content in Thermodynamics is to concepts) but my daughter loves them both equally. The imagery and the writing are much more at the level of my 2 year old than some of the other books. I really don't like how bare Chris Ferrie books can be, they aren't warm and inviting like these books. I have two of Ruth Spiros and several Chris Ferrie (ABCs of Mathematics, Physics, Science, and General Relativity) , but my child prefers Spiro's books over Ferrie's.

This is one of our 2 year old's favorite books - and has reliably been for a year already. The pages are colorful and exciting and have lots of things to "discuss" with with your child (the meow, bedroom furniture etc). Yes it is mostly a reference to schrodinger's cat and not about wave functions, but it's a cute story and makes a kid want to read it - which I believe is what a toddler book is supposed to do! Other toddler quantum books have less color and aren't as fun for them. For those parents who are looking for something a little more advanced: I've taken several quantum physics courses myself and if you want a book that goes into more detail, buy the Griffiths textbook, which, although it can be read to a toddler, it's probably in a different section of the website. Good luck with Dirac notation; you'll probably want a white board and some markers too.

I love is book. There is a baby, there is a kitty, there is a box. The book takes the concept of the kitty being asleep and awake in the box to a level my 2 year old enjoys. There is no math or formulas, but she is introduced to the concept and is excited about it.

I bought this book as a gift for my grand nephew and the baby absolutely adores it! The illustrations are so colorful and bright, and the simple story is perfect for a baby or toddler. I also like that for a non-science person this book provides an introduction that’s easy to understand, even for us grownups! These books are going to be my go-to gifts for baby showers.

My 15 month old LOVES this book! He lights up like a Christmas tree when I read it to him. I love that it teaches a very basic concept with adorable pictures. Highly recommend!

I think this book is adorable. Instead of the cat being dead or alive it's either awake or sleeping. Good introduction to the Schrodinger's cat paradox.

As a beginner knitter, I was having problems that I had no idea how to fix and had limited local sources to remedy that. When the Knitter's Companion Deluxe Edition w/DVD arrived, I knew I was about to have a new knitting experience. First, Vicki Square covers information in the spiral bound book from yarn, needles, methods of knitting to measuring your garment, having correct gauge and fixing all those little holes, unintended yarnovers and dropped stitches. The DVD covers the same information with Vicki demonstrating the various techniques and expanding on what is in the book. The visual is excellent for a beginner like me. A lot of aha moments.In just a few days, I was no longer frustrated with errors - after a few weeks, I find myself catching the mistake as it happens. I can pick stitches with ease, pull up a dropped stitch and remedy a split stitch even a few rows back. I have also learned to knit in the continental style which is easier for me as I have crocheted for many decades. As I made that transition, I found I made fewer mistakes, I was knitting faster and enjoying the process of knitting.I highly recommend this book w/DVDs for beginners and anyone who might need a refresher. You won't be disappointed.

This is the most useful book I've ever had. I'm an accomplished knitter and I love it for reference. I've bought this book several times as gifts for people who ask me to teach them... So useful for beginning as well as advanced knitters.

I have been using the 1996 edition of this book and like it for its clarity of instructions, simple illustrations, and sturdy construction. However, I purchased the new Deluxe edition with DVDs for a gift, and was disappointed that the illustrations are not as crisp, the index is lacking some entries, and the paper stock is thinner (meaning it probably won't hold up as well as my old version). The DVDs surely will be a help to those just learning techniques, but I use the book as a quick reference and would not likely bother with the DVDs.

When my niece asked me to teach her to knit I reluctantly relinquished my old version of this handy guide to her. It's the best packable reference book for basic and intermediate knit stitches I've seen out there. Of course Auntie couldn't go without her most favorite knitting book so she bought herself the updated version with the DVD's. Same great drawings that are clear and concise with the added visual aids of the video discs. Now my niece and I are both happy knitters1

Contacted Amazon, I was refunded of course. Amazon took this off the selling page for a short period of time (less than a week). I noticed it back on the selling page, I inquired Amazon directly to find out if the problem had been fixed.I was assured it had been taken care of, and to go ahead and order another copy of the Knitting Companion book with 2 DVD's. They would pay the shipping.I was so pleased that the problem was handled so quickly. I ordered the THIRD copy, need I say more.Yes, the so called repaired or fixed copy, has the EXACT SAME DVD ISSUE.So I recommend highly, to verify if this is indeed rectified.Otherwise it's a great book, and if paying for the DVD's they should work properly.

I have been knitting for several years and still find plenty in this "Companion" to help and improve on my skills. And I can see that for the beginner, too, the instructions are clear and easy to follow. I have become a real fan of Vicki Square through her "Knit Kimono" books. Her attention to detail and finishing techniques pretty well guarantees that the finished project will be something to be proud of. The DVD's in this kit are especially helpful. There is nothing like a live visual demonstration through each of the intricacies of knitting and crocheting to take the mystery out of it all. She makes everything look simple and doable but professional. I know I will refer to this book and the DVD's time and time again, and that I won't have to look elsewhere for a solution to any little 'knitting puzzle' that might come up in my projects.

There are some recipes that appear to have some ingredients missing or out of place, however with the general concept laid in the beginning one is able to catch this and adjust accordingly.

This little book is packed with everything you need to know about soap making, whether as a hobby or a business. Even covers legalize, as well as wonderful soap recipes.

This is very good for people looking to get into making soap and bath products. I love the recipes, and there is sooo much information. I learned quite a bit about essential oils, and I'm really excited to get to work making wonderful treats for myself and my friends.

Full of soap recipes, lotions, bath bombs, cleaners. Something for everyone. I really enjoyed these books and got a few recipes out that I am going to try.
